Decisions, Decisions.........
I already have a Kindle which I love. Perfect for reading which I do every day. I also have a laptop, rarely used.....main desktop PC, wouldn't be without....and an iPod Touch with Wi-Fi, love that too.
Now, do I really need a Kindle Fire?
I would only use it on Wi-Fi (at home and at work) and I guess then it would replace my iPod and original Kindle.
In a way, it wouldn't make sense to get one (Xmas pressie I'm thinking lol) but in another way, I want one!
Would you get one?

I have my home computer, a couple of servers, a laptop and a mini netbook. This type of tablet doesn't interest me in the slightest. If I was interested and going by specs, I think I would be inclined to go for Google Nextus 7. The Kindle Fire is about the same specs as my Blackberry, with about 200 Mbs more RAM. All I ever use my mobile for online, is to occasionally to check the news headlines and the weather. If I was going out for the day, I would take my netbook and that has much more scope than any tablet. More than 12 hours away from home I would take my laptop.

Lynnrose, if we only did what makes sense life would be so very boring, the only thing that stops me (apart from cost) changing technology items at home is what do do with the old stuff, but if it's a present for Xmas I would go for it, I have had the Kindle at £69 for a few weeks now and I use it every day, wish I had purchased one ages ago. So put your request in to Father Christmas and look forward to the big day !!!

I'd be very careful about getting another kindle of any sort, Lynn babes; just watched a docco about 'em on the telly, and apparently they're failing like flies round a candle. Returns rate is around 50% so far, and that's only the ones we know about. Seems that they're very vulnerable to electrostatic disharges caused by being carried around in your pocket or handbag, or maybe the act of taking your coat off while holding it; the display screen starts to lose some of its sectors, and eventually the screen fails altogether. Amazon is looking at the problem, but there's several million of them already out there with the same vulnerability - please, be warned!

Yes JB that was not good news, last thing I wanted to see having just had one, mine only cost £69 but even so you expect them to last a little longer then 12 months. It seems it's not a good idea to put them through an XRay machine at the airport. Tell Father Christmas to hold on for the moment Lynnrose !

I've not heard of any trouble with the Kindle, the trouble is with the new version. They probably expanded on what they had and that doesn't always work well. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and do a complete new build. It doesn't matter if its software or hardware, Windows is good proof of that.

Well, I have to admit I hardly ever switch it on! I use my desktop at home and the desktop at work. Use my 'normal' Kindle for reading books. Use my iPod Touch for voice/text/video/webcam chats with family.
I just don't really need to use it! Yes, seems a bit pointless getting one now. One thing that was annoying though when I first got it...the battery life is very poor, but as long as you turn off Wi-Fi when not needed, makes an amazing difference.

WiFi makes a big difference to anything Lynnrose. Blackberry have got one of the best battery lives of the smart phones. Mine hasn't got any stupid apps installed and I only leave the 3G turned on, I only have to charge it about every 3-4 days. If I turn on the WiFi that drops to a little over one day. If I turn on the GPS, it drops to about 8 hours. I only use my Jabra Bluetooth earpiece in the house, if I'm making a call or expecting one and Bluetooth doesn't suck it up like WiFi does. I'm always scared of losing my Bluetooth earpiece and never use it when I go out. In the flat I can leave the phone on the table and go where I like, even downstairs to the front porch. Bluetooth answers and you dont need to touch the phone at all. When I'm out I still use a Jabra, but a wired one that I cant lose and that doesn't make any difference to battery life.
A big percentage of people seem to think that as they have WiFi, its got to be turned on. They install all kinds of silly apps, completely blind to what they are doing to their battery life. I think they must charge their phones 3 times a day. I have got a rechargable extended battery to plug into if I want to use the GPS, I certainly dont need to broadcast where I am to everyone in my address book all of the time. I even keep the WiFi on my laptops turned off, unless I'm actually going online. My main laptop only goes for 3 hours with WiFi turned on and its got the biggest battery that they make for it. I bought another battery for the times I cant get to a powerpoint.
There is only one rule for any device, never have anything turned on unless you need to and WiFi is about the worst juice guzzler except GPS. Only ever use GPS if you are completely lost.
I might have gone off the suject a little bit, but you started it.
