Hi, Guys,
My Avast software is constantly telling me that "a threat has been detected" but it does not tell me how to remove it, so the only way to use the computer without this annoying pop-up is to disable Avast.
Can anyone help please.
Many thanks,
Alex

All threats are placed into the virus chest open up the User Interface click on Maintenance then Virus Chest you will find all the threats in there
Do not worry about the pop-up it means that Avast is doing what it is supposed to be doing.

Thank you Merchant 42. Yes the pop up is telling me that "no further action is needed on my part", but it keeps doing it approximately every 5 seconds and shows no sign of stopping.
My guess is that I have some kind of a Trojan virus, which is constantly creating new files. OK, avast is removing them, but will this ever stop.
Thanks,
Alex

Thank you Biker. Tried that and installed Cyberdefender, which did not cure the porblem, but caused more. Other websites kept popping up with various offers. I have had to uninstall it.
Is there something else that you know of?
Thanks,
Alex

Thank you. I have set the popups to "0", but they are still popping up. There is something very wrong here, because it did not happen before and now the Avast is working all the time.
Thanks,
Alex

Thanks, Alex My problem is caused by LNK:Runner and clearly Avast cannot remove it. Does anyone know how to remove it, preferably free of charge. Thanks, Alex

I don't know how many antivirus programs you are running but that is one problem---LNK;runner is a process in your computer not a virus

I did a Google search and it came up with [Kaspersky] Trojan.Win32.runner, so it deffinitely is not a regular programme but disguised as one.
I am only running Avast.
Thanks,
Alex

That's a nasty little bugger, it's a good time to clean up and reformat, once it's gone

Thank you Roz, I will try that later. I think I managed to get rid of the infection by running (and buying) STOPzilla. I had two Trojans, Win32.Wundo and Win32.Fake File and Ramnit virus. I am not sure how all these got through, when I was running awast!
Now I have another problem. Mozilla Thunderbird does not work - cannot connect to ISP, but Outlook Express works. Also, Add/Remover programmes in Control Panel comes up blank and stays blank.

I use Thunderbird too. It might be an idea to delete your ISP account in TB and then re-enter it as a new account. Make sure to close and re-open TB between doing it or the old settings will stay in it's cache. Is this any help with your blank Add/Remove list?

Tried that Roz and the Thunderbird cannot create additional account. It get to the stage where it "cannot recognize account setting" and there is no option to proceed manually. Thanks, Alex

I would just try something else before creating a new profile (as you mention in this other thread) Doing that alone might not solve it anyway without deleting your old profile which is a bit overkill as yet I think. Try going into your profile folder, which is in XP -- I'm guessing you have XP from other things you've said -- C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name]Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles. Open the xxxxxxxx.default folder, then the mail folder and delete your isp folder, pop3.yourisp.co.uk. Make sure TB isn't running before doing this of course.

I have managed to "repair" system and the Add/Remove list is now "populated", but no luck with Thunderbird. I have undeleted and reinstalled on a separate HD and the problem pesists. It will not let me create email account. Outlook express continues to work, but I don't like it. Thanks, Alex

Did you delete the ISP folder Alex like I mentioned in my last post? Because it sounds like it was still picking it up, which it will unless maybe you completely removed TB including the profiles folder etc. Maybe you would prefer to do a clean install of it. To do this you uninstall from add and remove as normal but also you must either delete or rename (renaming is the best option if you think you might need any of your old emails or other data) the profiles folder. It tells you here under "Uninstalling" where that file is located on various operation systems. Just rename it to something like Thunderbirdold, then it wont pick it up again.

I managed to repair some of the system, so the Add/Delete list is now "populated", but the Thunderbird still will not let me create a new email account. I have uninstalled it twice and re-installed.
Thanks again,
Alex

No virus killer is 100% effective and I mean none of them
There are 3 tools I use for virus removal on a regular basis and I rarely have to use anything else to fix any PC/laptop
You could almost set up a virus removal business with them
Rkill - gets rid of memory resident malware that may be hiding in RAM already
Combofix - targets the 50 most stubborn viruses - updated on a regular basis
MBAM - gets rid of the lesser evils that combofix may have missed

Thank you for that information, Mikh. Are they all free and can they be downloaded?
Do you have all 3 permanently on your system or do you install and uninstall as needed?
Thanks again,
Alex

Combofix and Rkill are just for one off use - nothing gets installed. MBAM remains on the system but is not resident i.e it doesn't start at boot up time with Windows. You have to remember to run it once a week or so
And yes all 3 are free - as the majority of good tools are. NEVER pay for these kind of things, it's invariably a scam or next to useless for the job it claims it can do
