H! All,
Got this letter today from Virgin Media 50mb for £20.00 so it seems till you look at the bottom of the page?
Dose this mean i can get 50mb for £20 or do i have to pay £96.50 a month?
Yours confused

Looks like £96.50 total bill, but that includes a TV package upgrade too
Best thing to do is ring and enquire Just dial 150 from a Virginmedia land line
If you just wanted to upgrade your existing broadband, then the figure would be about £20 extra or maybe even less You would need a new modem though and they probably want to charge you for that
A quick look through the 'digitalspy' forums reveals a £7 monthly increase, but a £55 installation charge That was dated back in March though, so things may have changed

It looks to me as though they're offering you the VIP deal for £96.5 and an optional one off £20 fee to come and optimize your computers. I could be wrong but that's what I read into it. 50Mb broadband is excellent consistent fast browsing and no STM

When I upgraded to 50 Mb, they cut the price of what I was paying for the XL TV and my total bill went down. I think it worked out about £9.00 a month less than when I was on 20 Mb connection. I did have to pay for the router and modem upgrade, I think it was about £50.00 for that and they slung in a high speed USB dongle for my laptop. The built in wireless on my laptop only gave me about 20 Mb connection. My mini netbook gives me the full 50 Mb without using the dongle, shows how things have improved over the last 3 years or so.

The easiest way is to put the disk in and follow the instructions. He should have let you set that up when he installed it, it only a 2 minute job.
I have to put the high speed dongle in my laptop, to get full speed. My mini netbook goes like a rocket without the dongle. Built in WiFi has come a long way in the last couple of years.

Anybody? He should have shown you how to log on to your router and set up encryption, when I had 50Mb set up the engineer was very thorough and made sure I set up an encrypted connection. Sounds like he didn't set up the encryption Elvis. You should have 2 passwords, one for the encryption and an admin one to get into the router control panel. If you have got a D-Link router, you pick the encryption password and the router insists on giving you a string of meaningless numbers and letters as an admin password. You can only make changes while hard wired to the router, it cant be done wirelessly.

H! KC,
Yes it's a D-Link and it's the encryption i am more worried about i have a password on for login in on my laptop not too sure what the other one is for (i think it's the name of my network) i do not think i have it encrypted. I had a look in the manual last night and i am setting my 1 TB up at the moment and that's when i will need to sorted out for.
I have put W7 64bit (yes i know) and Linux Mint 64bit on my new 1TB hardrive but i have not connected to the Interweb yet saving that for Sunday.

Run the disk and if its already set up properly, you will have to put in that password to get in. Then it will take you to the encryption page and you can set it up if its not set up already. If he's set it up and not given you the WPA password, you will have to reset the router and start again. As long as its set; you dont need to worry, even if you haven't got the password. At any time you want to make any changes, you will have to reset the whole thing. To change the password you need the old one to do it and if you dont have it a reset is the only way.

it's very unlike Virgin to give us a major upgrade at no extra cost! Unless they are planning to drop the current bottom tier of 10Mb and switch everyone on it to 20Mb. We'll just have to wait and see.

H! KC, I put the CD in and i got this Wireless Network Name (ssid) : got it Cannel : Auto Channel IT'S ON (recommended) Encryption: Disabled. I get a chouce of WEP64, WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK WHICH IS THE BEST TO USE?

WPA or WPA2 is supposed to be a bit better, either one is OK.
WEP is the old standard and I think they only include it for anyone using an old print server or something. You have to have the same encryption for all the peripherals and the older stuff didn't have WPA.

It doesn't matter Elvis, you can leave it running if you like. If you turn it off, you will have to turn the nag off as well. If you dont turn the nag off it will keep telling you its not running. You use Action Centre to turn off the nags, just click the icon down near the clock.

When I upgraded, there was hardly any difference between my old contract and the new. Then they gave me a discount on what I was paying for my TV package on the old contract. I finished up paying about £8.00 less per month. They insisted I sign a new contract, as my old one was signed before the last Ice Age and they charged me about £40.00 for the privalege. I'm pleased I did, as I have already got that 40 quid back from the reduction on the TV package.
