H! Millwall,
Their may not be much difference in 20mb to 50mb but it only cost me about £8.00, i also get a Wireless Router which i was going to buy one so i saved about £50.00 I made sure I got the Wireless Router and Wireless N USB mini adapter free before I downgraded Anyone who upgrades to 50mb, make sure you get the Wireless Router and Wireless N USB mini adapter as 1: they do not always tell you can have them 2: they keep running out off stock so fail to deliver (took me 6 weeks to get mine)

Some Laptops wont connect at above 20 Mbs on wireless Elvis, so Virgin should have given you a USB high speed wireless dongle for your laptop. You had better ask them quick, if they didnt give you one.

They all have Elvis, but not all have got 50 Mb Wireless connection. My mini netbook has, but my laptop is only 20 Mb and I have to use the dongle if I want 50 Mb. The feller that put my modem and router in, didn't even ask if I had a laptop and gave me the dongle anyway. They advertise that its part of the package, so your entitled to it even if you dont need it. You could even stick it in Nightmare and do away with a cable.

When I used my old "G" wireless router on Virgin 50mb service I would only get up to 25mb max and on my laptop it was the same, but when I connected the Virgin wireless router I would get 50mb on both computers.

Thats good news Elvis. I dont use mine normally, the inbuilt is good enough. It makes a big difference if you want to download big files though and thats the only time I bother using it. It's a D-Link, so if you use it too often it will probably quit.

If you have a PC that's connected by cable why would you want to mess around with a wireless dongle. The dongle working at it's maximum is 50mbs where as your cable should be offering up to 100 mbs (providing of course it's 10/100 system) and you haven't got interference, location or security problems? If your just connecting to the internet then fine but if you transferring files around internally (PC to PC) then the cable wins every time.

I have to agree with you MM, I wouldn't use wireless unless I needed to move the computer and was unable to relocate the router. If I need to download a lot with the laptop, I use the high speed dongle when on my network. I havent got a spare port to plug it in. I've got my main computer, 2 servers and a printer plugged into the router and I'm not going to unplug something to plug it in. If I'm on the move I only use the built in wireless, but I'm not going to download anything big. If I haven't got a handy network, I use a mobile network dongle. I'm never going to download anything with that at 3.6 Mb, although I sometimes get a 5 Mb connection. Wireless is OK if you need it, but you cant beat a hard wired connection.

As long as you learn something Elvis. When your doing something nearly every day, you should know a bit more at the end of each week. Even if its only one thing, your making progress. Actually I find learning easy, its remembering what you've learnt is the hard bit.

Your right of course Elvis, I have to stick with an operating system that works properly. I would never manage to get anything done, if I played around with experimental open source garbage. I wouldn't want to be phoning Mikk up all the time, he's got his hands full keeping you on the straight and narrow.

My first modem crapped out after a couple of weeks, but that was with NTL. Since then I've never really needed them to touch my BB. I wore my old silver modem out and bought a blue NTL one for a fiver on eBay. That done me until I got the 50 Mb connection. That was the first and last time they have ever touched it since NTL put it in. I wouldn't have let them touch it then, but they insisted. They do have to put a filter on the TV cable when they upgrade the BB to 50 Mb though. Not like the idiot who put my V Box in, he put a filter on the wall inlet and blocked my BB. I did have a lot of trouble with the old Pace set top boxes. I bought my V Box when they first put them on offer for 75 quid and I've not had any more trouble with my TV either.
