Had a Toshiba Tempro alert saying a driver update was available and it downloaded in a zip file. It seems WinZip is no longer free and you need WinZip 11/12 for Vista (I have 6/7/8/9 on mag CD's) . How many times do you use Zip files anyway? Could go for a trial download of shareware or how about this freebie Zip Genius Standard Edition 6.0.3.1150 on CNET. Any recommendations as to the best one to use?

I had no idea you could right click and unzip with Vista. I did it and the update installed perfectly. I made a note of WinRar as well for future ref. I jumped from 98SE to Vista and missed all the in between changes in the OS Bet you think, what is this plum doing with a computer, can't even consult the Help Files first
Thanks all for help.

Personally I have always had problems with WinRAR simply because I apparently need to pay for the unzipping program.
Anyone know of a way to access WinRAR without having to pay?

Even if you haven't bought Winrar it will still unzip the files. Then a box opens and askes you if you want to buy the program. You just click Close and that box closes, but not the box containing the files. Then you can click on the .exe file and install the program you want.

I find the best value ZIP software is from Software995.com It is free and does the business - they do other stuff too such as pdf and OCR. All free - for some programs you get advertising and for a small fee can get rid of this, but for the amount I use it - it really isn't a problem. Give it a go! (no I'm not an agent!) ;D

There is no best free zip utilities around and WINZIP has never been free. It has always been shareware. In some versions it works after the limit has been reached.
If you want to zip files then you might as well use the operating system's built in ZIP utility. You just right-click anywhere in the window, click on NEW, select new "Compressed ZIP folder", create a name and then move the files to the zip folder. If you want to unzip files you just open the zip folder and move the contents out of that folder.

The inbuilt unzipper is too basic and doesn't support enough file types
KGB has some proud boasts, but requires .net framework installed, and gets flagged as a virus in certain checkers - which would worry some people. (*used* to use Ken? is that because it doesn't like 64 bit, or because you now use something better?)
7-zip is IMO the best free one
but if you can put up with the nag screen of Winrar, which is unlimited, then that is definitely the best, supporting all common archives including ISO's
Winzip is next to useless as far as I'm concerned and only clever marketing - by including it on nearly every magazine cover disk/motherboard driver disk/driver disk in general etc etc has it been kept in the spotlight after it died as a useful utility many years ago

I find that Winrar works better for what I'm doing these days. When I just wanted an unzipper or zipper upper, I found KGB worked fine. Like all apps, it all depends on what you want to use them for. Some things work well together and others wont work at all.

Right then, I've read all the above and today Tempro downloaded 4 more zipped driver updates. Should you OPEN or SAVE? Decided SAVE was best so SAVED to DOWNLOAD folder Then Right Click and Extract Files. If I remember correctly WinZip unzipped and installed the files but Vista Extract leaves you to decide what action to take after extraction. Some Downloads have more than one .exe app. in them, so one (me anyway) might end up not RUNNING all the required bits. Should you then RUN all the application files? Take this one from today: Config Free 7.3.18
Name--------------Date Modified------Type.................Size cfFncEnabler......07/03/2009........Application..............16KB realtek86.........07/03/2009........Registration Entries......2KB setup.............07/03/2009........Application.............36,608KB Tinst.............07/03/2009........Configuration............1KB
Would it be better to choose a Zip program that unzips and installs in one fell swoop from trusted sites. Sorry if this is boring you.

There are two basic forms of Zip files those which consist of a group of files which may or may not bear any relationship with each other. In some cases the only way to send a .exe file via Email attachment is to zip it up as most ISPs will remove .exe files from an attachment for safety reasons.
The other form of Zip file is a set of files which may be set up as self extracting zip file and usually take the form of a complete set of files for an application. As in your sample above. Where there is a file called setup.exe then by double clicking this it should install the application including any files which may also be .exe files as above cfFncEnabler above. In some cases there my be a readme.txt file included which may give instructions on how to instal the application. # The choice of unzip program will not identify what is to be run.

7-Zip was on last months Vista mag CD (essential free tools) so I installed it earlier. Reading WinRar user comments on download.com, several people got a virus from it and the WinRar people apologised for the hassle. I assume they didn't download from a reputable site. Anyway all the Tempro updates are Grey, whereas urgent ones are Orange or Red so I have them in the download folder but didn't bother installing them.
computing50years, cheers for that. I did click on the Setup .exe and it gave me 3 options, Default, Custom and something else, so I exited until I read the Help files. I'm definately taking this far too seriously. So many c*** updates, most of which are probably just to give the impression software merchants are earning their money.
