It's now two weeks since I quit smoking and switched to vapes instead - does that really count as quitting or just a halfway stage to quitting for real?
50+ years ago I started smoking, both my parents smoked, you could get 10 cigarettes from a machine outside the local shop for 10p (yes really that cheap) and even the health shops sold herbal cigarettes!
Obviously I wasn't a serious smoker back then, but it was kind of normal to smoke and you risked being branded a wimp if you didn't.
50 years on, the doctors bluntly told me I probably had cancer at a yearly checkup. Many tests later that was downgraded to emphysema, which is still not good, but better than the alternative.
I'd like to say health reasons were the prime factor in me quitting and of course that was part of it, but if I'm honest it was the latest budget increase which meant a 50 gram packet was now over £40 to buy.
And an interest (a big fat crush actually) in a woman who doesn't smoke, may have had something to do with it too.
Lot's of benefits to my new lifestyle, one being cleaning up my little circle of shame - a mostly full ashtray on the floor.
I'm quite a tidy organised person normally with a place for everything bordering on OCD, but somehow this didn't apply to the ashtray and it's contents or the accumulation of tobacco strands on my desk.
I cleared and cleaned my desk and long suffering keyboard of all ash and strands of tobacco last week and it still looks good today
I definitely feel healthier and can walk up the big hill I live on without stopping now.
For anyone wanting to go the same route I recommend the OXVA XLIM (make sure you get the V3 pod refills though) and the XROS 3 Mini as decent top pocket sized reusable vapes.
The Oxva is around £20 and the Xros less than £15 - you can get both for less than the price of a packet of tobacco!
Strangely enough I've gone for peach flavour but always laughed at people using non tobacco flavoured ones. Never found one that tasted similar to my preferred tobacco though.
