Having been asked to look at two AIO (all in one) computers with a view to making them useful again, I knew Linux was the answer.
1) An old iMAC circa 2008 . I didn't even consider putting MacOS back on because the newest version it could take would still be hopelessly out of date and unsecure on the internet.
Only 2 GB of RAM is pushing it even for Linux, but it was a bang up to date edition I put on and it passed the full screen youtube test fairly easily. The inbuilt wireless at least works, but is virtuually useless and far too slow even for basic surfing. A wired connection works fine though.
2) An almost as old Acer AIO was the next one to rescue and at least it has 3 GB of RAM! It claims to have wireless but Linux couldn't find it, but again it was fine with a wired connection. I do have more modern wi-fi adapters I could fit if requested though. Both have half decent sound for such old beasts and that's another 2 rescued from landfill.
Ideally I'd like to upgrade the RAM and fit SSD's to make them even better, but the iMAC in particular looks a pain to dismantle and the cost is not worth it when I can get better AIO's off eBay that already come with a decent amount of RAM and SSD's

"a pain to dismantle," I can relate to that. My first desktop was an HP, "Slimline," a nice compact PC, but for them to design it like that, I had to disassemble it a bit when I MAX'd out its' RAM, way back in the day, which by todays standards, even after being max'd out was a joke, which is one reason I upgraded it with my Macmini.
Anyway, it has been sitting in our 2nd bedroom in a corner waiting to be trashed, but I first wanted to take out the HD, drilling holes in it making it unuseable, but not sweating it, because it is password protected. Would be such a PIA to dismantle.
But I have a friend who had the same one way back when, who had drilled his and gave it to me, me offering to get rid of it for him, LOL, right in my Trash can, even though electronics are not supposed to be trashed that way. HEY, I pay enough for trash pick up, LOL.
Anyway, I reminded him about my having taken his for him, and he drilled out its; HD, so He offered to do that for me too. So I have bought the drill bit he requested, HARD ENOUGH to penetrate the HD's case, and the next time we meet for lunch, will give it to him. HE can then trash MINE however he wishes.
Like Colonel Klink used to say on, "Hogan's Heroes," I KNOW NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTHING," LOL LOL ":-)
