Buying an entry level graphics card for gaming was never cheap (typically £150-£200) before Covid shortages and crypto miners pushed it to ridiculous levels of £400-£700 and £1000+ cards appearing for the first time! Although they would have been pretty pricey top of the range cards before too
The supply situation has more or less returned to normal now but the prices are still artificially high, so when I saw a new card from Nvidia appearing at £150, I thought normality has returned at last.
The graphics card market has always been a minefield, with manufacturers producing "new" cards that are actually worse than older cards and this is the situation again with the Nvidia GTX 1630
It's significantly worse than the Nvidia GTX 1050 TI that was released over 6 years ago and should be well under £100 to reflect it's very weak performance.
If you are in the market for a gaming PC and it comes with the GTX 1630 DO NOT buy it, you will be very disappointed.
It came to my attention because our friends over at Specola are up to their old tricks of trying to sell a "gaming PC" that is anything but that. They put old components in a new case to trap the unwary and I thought they had mended their ways with this new graphics card installed. It wouldn't be so bad if the price reflected the second hand nature and poor components, but it doesn't at £660. I reckon that's a £250-£300 profit margin, which is just plain greedy and not fit for purpose anyway.
