The 8 inch and 10 inch models already had fairly recently updated hardware specs, leaving the 7 inch version lagging behind since the last 2019 version came out.
The new version is available to pre-order now - at a new price of £59.99 (previously was locked at £49.99 for many years) It doesn't really matter that much because a) you are getting more for you money
and b) they have them on offer at least 3 times a year and I predict the offer price will be £39.99 or even less. You might have to wait till Black Friday, but I suspect they'll have given up on full retail price (briefly) by September. No guarantees, but that's their normal pattern.
Before I reveal the updated specs, let's make it clear this is a budget tablet that is obviously not as good as iPad's or Samsung's that cost a LOT more. Yet still I see reviews comparing them to the market leaders and pointing out the glaringly obvious differences. It's like saying plastic shoes are poor compared to leather ones - well duh!
The new version promises a better processor with 30% more speed and the RAM doubled to 2 GB, along with a longer lasting battery and USB C charging.
Some reviews have picked up on only 3 colours being available as if it's a big deal. Just seems like petty nit picking to me and I don't see any reason for any colours apart from the standard black myself.
Especially when most will (or should be) in a case where you can't even see the colour.
For those unfamiliar with Amazon's Fire tablets, they come with their own 'FireOS' rather than standard Android, so you don't get access to Google's Play Store.
This is not the disaster that many make it out to be. You can still get a lot of the popular social apps like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Whatsapp, Youtube etc along with 60,000 others.
There is a way of forcing Play Store on it, but you'll invalidate your warranty and it requires a fair bit of technical skill to do it.
Target audience is first time tablet users who can't justify the price of top end (£250-£400+) tablets for themselves or their kids.
I've only had experience of the 10 inch model and that played Candy Crush fine! Should be even better on the smaller screen, less pixels to move around.
