Soild State Drives were always desirable but hideously expensive when they first came out.
The oft quoted comparison is 10 times faster than mechanical drives, which is plausible against slow 5400 RPM laptop drives, but in reality never gets there.
They are a LOT quicker, but 10 times is pushing it and probably 4-5 times is nearer the mark.
They have become affordable in the last few years and should get even cheaper as M.2 SSD's (fit straight to the motherboard) become ever more common.
I've just bought 4 small ones for £60 on eBay ( new decent brand ones) and that wouldn't have got me close to buying one 5 or 6 years ago.
Does this spell the death for mechanical drives? For me it does because I don't hoard media files and it's the norm for new PC's to come with a small SSD booting drive and a larger mechanical drive for storage.
I've rescued many an old PC/laptop by installing an SSD to replace the clunky mechanical one - it's amazing to see the difference.
If you haven't joined the SSD revolution yet, you'll be astounded at the speed increase.
