Officialy the free upgrade from 7/8 finished a while ago, but it's still available through a genuine microsoft program called 'mediacreationtool'
it's not on their site anymore, or at least I couldn't find it, but you can still get it from other sites
Latest version is mediacreationtool2004 (google it) 2004 refers to the Windows 10 version number, not the year. If you find the 1809 version, that works too, because I used it fairly recently.
Run the program in Windows7/8 and choose the upgrade option. You get the option to keep existing programs and files, but be warned, this will significantly up the install time, which isn't exactly quick even if you choose the fresh install option. Maybe it's just me, I'm spoiled by 5-10 minute Linux installs
We are talking best part of an hour though (fresh install) and a whole lot longer if you keep your files - depending how many you have of course
Ideally you should do a bit of housekeeping first to speed things up.
1) backup files to an external source (doubtful you'll lose any, it's just to save time)
2) uninstall programs you rarely or never use. In fact uninstall everything you can easily replace by downloading it again.
3) or 2b - yes that includes anti virus software, which you should do first - not because mediacreationtool is dodgy in any way, it's a Microsoft program made by them.
It's because a lot of anti virus software takes a while to uninstall and it will speed up getting rid of other programs once it's gone.
If you hate the look of Windows 10, which you probably will because it's awful, there is a program called 'classic shell' which will make it look and behave like a previous version of Windows
