I have Windows 7 64 bit, Internet Explorer 11 and Google Chrome - the latter since yesterday.
You-Tube was excellent but now it sets up perfectly except that I cannot get any sound or pictures except a semi circle icon which keeps circling in the middle of the screen. I get the error: The add-on for this Website failed to run. The progress bar works perfectly and if dragged it shows small progressive clips of the participant but no action or speech. I have experimented with my security settings and 'Manage Add-ons' but without any success. Can you help please?

One of your browser add-ons might be faulty. Disable add-ons one after the other, trying youtube after each one to see if you can find the culprit

Thanks Lynn., will do. However, I have very recently downloaded Google Chrome because of this fault and I have, by messing about with the latter, overcome the problem, although at the moment it takes 4 steps to get there. I am now getting somewhere, but I will still test those add-ons.

I tried testing all of the add-ons but that did not reveal anything useful. Anyway, many thanks.

Lynn.,
I fail to understand this: I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1 and Internet Explorer 11 Version 11.0.9600.17633. All of my Add-ons are 32 bit. I have not been able to establish what bit Internet Explorer is. I went to Task Manager looking for iexplore.exe. I was told that if there is a number 32 against it then IE is a 32 bit version. If no number it is a 64 bit version. All I found was explore.exe with no number, but I expected to find iexpore.exe and there was no sign of that. Obviously I think, without much justification, that my add-ons should be 64 bit, but what do you think?

some more info: Some of the information stored in your browser cache or data might interfere with the working of YouTube. To fix this YouTube not working on Chrome, simply clear your browser's cache and cookies. With the following steps you will restore the default settings of the browser, effectively clearing the cache and cookies. YouTube requires Adobe Flash Player. Although Flash is built into Internet Explorer in Windows 8 and 8.1, if you're running IE in Windows 7 or earlier, you must install the add-on to the browser to view streaming video. smallbusiness.chron.com/wont-internet-explorer-show-youtube-videos-78736.html

Thanks Lynn. for your considerable interest and help. I get you-tube perfectly now via one click from Google Chrome but I am still trying to establish why Internet Explorer says 'The Add-on for this website failed to run, hence no you-tube via that route. If I do full backups to my external hard-drive I may be tempted to reset IE, but I am quite a way from doing that, if at all. Oh! BrowserHawk tells me that my IE is definitely 32 bit.

Internet explorer has been dropped by Microsoft and shouldn't be used because it is unsupported and therefore a security risk - they only now support 'Edge' as found in Windows 10
Google own Youtube and I would suspect they're either deliberately blocking IE for security reasons, or forcing people to use Chrome
Considering it's the most popular browser (Google Chrome that is) by the vast majority, they don't really need to force people to swap
Internet Explorer 11 has a tiny 2% share of the market and surprisingly Firefox is down to just 6.5%
