Hi Guys, I am having problems when I use Chrome. A new page appears urging me to download a "Windows Repair Tool" in order to disable pop ups. I am also asked to telephone "toll-free" line (in USA) where a technician is waiting to help me!! They may well have a point and I would like to disable pop ups, but I cannot find how to do it in Chrome. Any ideas would be welcome, of course. Many thanks, Alex

I dont use Chrome and cant help you much, but dont be tempted to phone anyone for help. They say call free, but it will be the most expensive free call you ever make.

Just use adblock or adblockplus from the chrome store, which can be accessed via settings/extensions. First you need to get rid of some malware that appears to have infected you Use this as a one off fix www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/Depending which virus checker you use, it may be reported as suspicious itself, but it's definitely not - just disable your virus checker first and re-enable it after running adwcleaner

Thank you Mikkh. Interesetingly, neither Chrome nor Firefox would let me download ADWCleaner. Both browsers keept freezing, so I went into Internet Explorer and downloaded without problems. After the clean up, which removed quite a lot of files, I installed adblock plus and all is well now. Noticeable increase in speed. Thanks again, Alex

Good, glad you got it sorted. Some clever malware does protect itself from known cures. I forgot to tell you to download it on another PC if possible to avoid that. I used to recommend 'combofix' for this type of one off fix, but it started to 'fix' things I didn't want changed in Windows (without asking) and it was always quite slow in scanning too.
Adwcleaner is much quicker and does a more thorough job in cleaning up browsers, so that's the one I use now
