Hi Guys,
I wanted to download one of the Linux Operating Systems late last night and the time required to download 614GBs was 1 hour and 20 mins. So, rather than stay up half the night, I gave up! I checked my download speed this morning and it was just over 8 Mb/sec, but the speed must have been a lot slower last night. I'd be interested to hear what you think is acceptable speed these days. Many thanks, Alex

Download speed depends on your internet supplier and what you are paying for. The biggest liers are BT, with their advert for 52 megabit. Dont sound too bad, until you realise its megabit and not megabyte. 52 megabits is only 6.5 megabytes and thats a bit slow compared to my 200 megabytes. At the same time, not everyone wants to pay what I pay for my connection. I was going to give it up, but Virgin cut me a deal a short time back. I dont really need that sort of speed anymore.

Like Ken says, depends what you're used to and how much you pay, but..... I would be horrified and frustrated at that speed. I just downloaded Android-x86 (621 MB)from Distrowatch in literally 2 minutes and I'm on the lowest speed cable (to save some money) and it's peak time right now (early evening on a Sunday)
So your 8 Mb/sec would be totally unacceptable to me, especially as I stream things most days either through Netflix (spare device donated by a generous friend) or Kodi
If I moved to a non cabled area, I'd be looking for 30 Mb/s as a usable bare minimum for such things

Another thing that gets overlooked, the other end has a download / upload speed as well. They will probably have a lot faster setup than you, but they might have 5000 people trying to download at the same time. That might be an exaggeration, but I think you will get the idea. Only so much data can come out of a server at a time, it always pays to try different servers and settle for the fastest.
