My desktop PC has W10 and it's sweet as a nut. Updates flawlessly and invisible. I only know when it comes to turning the machine off at noght.
One of the things we thought we'd get from my wife's new Laptop was the same, seamless behaviour. Sadly no. It is currently taking up the entire machine, installing some update or other. It's been almost an hour so far and it's at 35%.
I checked my PC just to see if I had anything waiting, but no, mine is up to date.
Strange and very annoying.

Just a thought if your desktop is connected via Ethernet and the laptop is wireless, try plugging the laptop into the router, it might just go a bit faster

It's an excellent suggestion. If I can anticipate an update and my wife being out of the house for a while, I may even try it. But with XP, updates were downloaded in the background and installed later. On my W10 machine, this seems to be what is happening, though, as I said, with the laptop, the entire machine is taken over. But as I said, a rant. There isn't a lot anyone can do, M$ is pretty much a law unto itself. Incidentally, did anyone see that news item where Apple is apparently turning off people's phones when they get unauthorised repairs? Seemingly, The cost of official repairs, say a broken screen are considerably more. One person said their repair had worked successfully for 10 months before Apple disabled the phone after an update. The issue is, these companies have now taken control of products we have paid for and can effectively blackmailing us to do what they want. Now if that doesn't make you dread getting out of bed in the morning then I don't know what will! www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-35502030www.theguardian.com/money/2016/feb/05/error-53-apple-iphone-software-update-handset-worthless-third-party-repair

Yeah
One of the reasons I will not have an Apple phone !
I recently got a Windows phone running 8.1 an OS that I hate with a passion , however I am pretty pleased with the phone and have had no problems with it.

Apart from the Update issue affecting the laptop, I have to say I really like W10.
But the issue with Apple disabling equipment is somewhat more serious.
If you get your car repaired at an independent, it's still your car. Be a bit of a stink if a manufacturer decided to start switching off vehicle management computers for example.
But Apple seems to be getting away with this.
That is a precedent.
The issue is a piece of legal mumbo jumbo, is the OS a service or a product. If it's a product then we own it.
On the other hand, if it is a service we use it under certain conditions. We don't own it.
M$ and Apple have argued that their OSs are services because they must continually update them. It's a strange argument, since that would mean a recall by a car manufacturer to fix a badly designed brake would mean the car is a service and we don't own it!
But Apple and M$ have gotten away with this simply because no-one can afford to take the matter to court and the only government in a position to do anything, the US federal government spends more on its civil war than it does on health or education.
It woudl be one thing for M$ or Apple to switch off a pirated copy of its OS. That is clearly theft though if it were a product they would need individual court orders, (Seizures), to do so. As a service they can though.
But enforcing a policy of their own engineers only being permitted to repair products is a dangerous innovation.
Good luck everyone. I really think we're going to need it.

I agree with what you are saying, but it is a matter of choice, a lot of people are not as Internet and PC wise as others.
So they will go along with it.
Which plays into what Microsoft and Apple are trying to do, another reason I am sticking with Win 7 for now
