New pc with McAfee

I got a new pc For Christmas from her indoors.
It has McAfee running my antivirus stuff.
Can I uninstall and use Avast or any antivirus recommended by you.
Do I need adware, spyware or any other defences.
What's the ideal defence?

Use the Mcafee removal tool to get rid of it completely, as the standard uninstall invariably leaves chunks of the program still intact

It's only a limited trial anyway and uses a lot of system resources

Panda Cloud is the obvious (much lighter) replacement - pick the basic (free) protection

Use an adblocker with your browser and install MBAM as a secondary line of defence - you must remember to run it though, say once a week

Good advice Mikkh,

I use Panda a/v and MBAM and SAS also. Adblock Plus is installed by default in the latest version of Maxthon browser too (v4.4.8.1000) and can be switched on or off at will.
