If you don#t use 'virtualbox' you can uninstall it via Synaptic or the built in software manager in Mint- use the search option to look for it, then right click it and pick remove for Synaptic. There is also a remove completely option that might solve your problem
in PClinuxOS there is a virtualbox manager which deals with updates, unfortunately it appears to be unique to that version of Linux, so if you do use it, you'll have to update via the software manager or Synaptic.
Looking on the Ubuntu forums, it seems a common fault in Ubuntu/Mint and they suggest running the following command
sudo apt-get install build-essential
That is if you want to install virtualbox at all

It's a very clever piece of software that lets you run another operating system inside your existing one, so if you're just an occasional user or a dabbler in a certain OS, you can run it inside virtualbox without installing it for real. Linux in Windows, Windows in Linux, Linux inside Linux - whatever you fancy basically
It's a good way of testing things and can be used as an extra layer of security when online
