Just noticed it replaced that nice alternative start menu you posted on mine - after a long delayed boot, wondered what was happening

You got the older Start menu back? Mine is still stuck with the W10 version. The little fix I posted elsewhere, about the Downloads Icon leading to the Downloads folder? computertypes.proboards.com/thread/8448/incorrect-labeling-icons-windows-partialThat's been rest as well. I'm back to Downloads taking me to Documents. I might try re-doing these later, though Windows is telling me that the Start Menu app has been removed because it doesn't work with my version of Windows. It could be that M$ has finally gone completely mad and has decided that the whole world will be dancing to an identical tune. Individualism will not be tolerated. !

I got the 'start menu X' back, haven't checked what else it's changed yet because I'm seriously considering returning to Windows 7 because 10's slightly smaller footprint isn't worth the hassle
I upgraded my Windows phone to 10 a few weeks ago and it's definitely not ready for phones, turning a perfectly good system into a slow bug ridden mess
Luckily I found 'Windows Phone Recovery tool' and managed to reset it back to Windows 8.1

That's interesting.
One of my wife's laptops has been converted to W10, the other not. The one that has is very buggy, with endless popups and things not doing what they should every so often and the updates occupy the machine for hours. She likes it because of one of the games, something along the lines of a larger version of Boggle by the looks of it.
The one that hasn't been changed remains as it was. I found myself having to use it for a while, when my old PC gave up and I had nothing else. It was incredibly slow, 1.5Ghz; of course, but the various bugs which affect the other didn't appear. Just the W7 nonsense of never knowing where anything actually is!
You seem to be having similar problems with your converted PC as my wife's.
By contrast, my new PC, has a clean install of W10 which I bought on a USB drive. It is the Retail version of course. That updates as fast as you like, I only notice it because it tells me. There are bugs of course, which I have described on CIT, but more a few annoyances than the infuriating nonsense some seem to be having with the converted installs. It did repeatedly pester me to turn on the Windows Firewall until I eventually gave in. So far, there don't seem to be any clashes.
It would seem the problems are mainly with those OSs which have been converted from W7.
This rolling back of my previous alterations is a little more interesting. I really didn't think the changes I made were anything more than cosmetic. Uninstalling Xbox and Sports may have been a little more fundamental, but hardly copyright infringement level. Yet they were all reset, with those apps back. I can't say my machine was any faster while they were uninstalled. Though it is pretty fast for now. I think back to XP and W7 after I removed a number of different services. The effects were obvious.
I installed Skype today and it attempted to connect using my Facebook page. Fortunately I was able to direct it to the account I wanted. I have a number of rather funky people I've friended on Facebook. I really don't fancy having any of them calling me up for a video chat!
W10 is quite annoying with how it insists upon combining so many accounts into one big M$ account. As long as it doesn't go broadcasting my email address all over the place. I really don't want to have to deal with all that spam.
Anyway, interesting to hear you've rolled back to W7. If anything comes of that please post it. (It's only recently I've discovered you used M$ at all. I thought you were exclusively Linux!)

If it's just one game that's holding her back, you should try the 'bluestacks' emulator, it basically turns your PC into an Android phone but full screen on your PC. The Android apps market is much larger than Microsoft's and the game she plays is almost certainly on there. I use it to play clash of clans and boom beach - two pretty heavy duty games that play flawlessly on bluestacks.
Annoyingly (extremely annoyingly because Android is Linux) there is no similar program in Linux that is a patch on bluestacks - not even close for playing the better games, and that's basically the only reason I need Windows at all. Seems silly but I've invested a fair bit of time in both games and some cash too, so until Linux get's a real bluestacks alternative I need Windows.
The obvious thing would be to use a tablet, but having tried the Tesco Hudl2, I found the 8 inch screen a bit too small for my eyesight and I'm not convinced the 10" models will be a big improvement. Can't fault the Hudl2 for speed/graphics etc, it is (rightly) highly rated in that price bracket and the step up to 10" would be an expensive gamble and likely to be inferior as well because the Hudl2 is one of the minority that comes with 2 GB RAM - most have a barely adequate 1 GB.
Bluestacks works fine on Windows 10, so it's worth installing to check if it's suitable before downgrading to 7

That sounds wonderful mikkh.
But to be honest, if it keeps her quiet and contended, then I am certainly not going to even think of rocking that boat.
I bought a tablet from Amazon some time ago. Dragon Touch Y88X 7'' Tablet PC Quad Core Google Android 4.4 KitKat, Allwinner A33 Cortex A7, Dual Camera, HD 1024x600 Multi-touch Screen, 8GB Nand Fl
It's essentially unusable. The touch screen is unpredictable to the point that it's essentially random. If I do manage to connect to Skype for example, the images sent and received are fizzy and the signal cuts off after a few mins. The surfing is pointless since it won't run most of the basic web software so I end up with Text.
The onscreen keyboard defaults to something with symbols. I bought an extension keyboard. It's OK for signing in but has no mouse.
My sister in law has a Smart phone thingy. It has a smaller screen and she had no problems with it at all, using it in preference to her laptop.
Suppose I was just unlucky

The one spec in that dragon touch not mentioned is the amount of RAM, it has a miserable 512 MB, I also see it's down to half price at $49.99 on Amazon now (£32.90)
Even at full price it was too cheap to be true and should have rang alarm bells. The Hudl2 cost me £130 but is now discontinued with no plans for a Hudl3
It's now being sold on Ebay as a rare item by some chancers for £150 - £180, but you can get it cheaper

You're definitely right mikkh. Had a look at a review of your Hudl2. I can see what you mean. The opening line of the review kinda says it all really. www.pcadvisor.co.uk/review/android-tablets/tesco-hudl-2-tablet-review-uk-offsale-3575158/Mine was cheap and I bought it on a whimm, which is unusual for me. I rarely waste money. I just thought it would be good for Skype. I thought my wife could keep it handy and on so able to answer calls anywhere in the house, possibly outside. Totally useless of course. Even if it did connect, which it doesn't, even within a few feet of the router, the battery life is terrible. It is also filled with loads of nonsense. Had a terrible time installing Skype in the first place. It is all supposed to be installed from the Google Store, but that refused to let me download anything without a credit card. I don't use credit cards and have no intention of giving them my PAYG card number. I eventually managed to install it direct from Skype, though as I said, surfing is difficult to say the least. But of course, pointless since it doesn't work. Anyway, my wife is happy so no rocking that boat alone. The tablet stands as a reminder to me to do research before I buy. I can't see me buying one now to be honest. We have 3 working PCs. As long as they continue there is no need to spend anything more there.

Reloaded the Windows 8 start menu again, from IO Bit. So far, no complaints from M$. The latest version doesn't seem to include the option of opening the standard W10 menu using the Windows key. No big deal. I've also tried a different anti-spy hack, this time DWS. It's portable which is always good news. It's also a lot simpler with fewer options. Select the options you want or don't. click the button Destroy Windows Spying. A third page to allow updates or remove Office garbage is also available.
