Twain Source

Hi All,

I have an Abbyy Fine Print 6 Scanner and when I try to scan an error message comes up "Can't open TWAIN source:HP Photosmart 5520 Twain".

All was well until a few days ago.

I have unistalled and reinstalled the HP Driver (from the HP site) several times but to no avail.

Has anyone any ideas please.

Abbyy Fine Print is additional software for your scanner, so rather than reinstall HP software, I would try and reinstall the Abbyy program instead as a possible fix

Strongly recommend you follow mikkh's suggestions first.

I've just done a clean install of Windows 10. I use one of the more common HP printers, f2480 and while the printer seemed fine, the scanner wouldn't work. (The Twain which you mentioned.)

Anyway, I ran this: support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03286146 and all seems fine now. I will add though that the interface is a little different in that I have to confirm that I am sure about 6 times instead of the usual 3!

Might be worth a shot. I will add that I ended up with a load of nonsense such as HP supplies shop, (or somehting) and other junk which sends infor back to HP. Managed to remove some of it

This is, sadly, the way things are going now, with so much hardware.

Hi all,

I have tried all suggestions but to no avail. Many thanks.

I think the problem is that although i try to download the full version form HP only the basic version is installed. Unfortunately I have lost the original installation disc.

Any other ideas please.

The basic drivers is only 25 MB

Thank you for your last reply and sorry for the delay in replying.

I have down loaded as suggetsed but it says "Basic Software" not "Full Softwear" when downloading. The problem still remains and Abbyy Fine reader still says "Cannot open TWAIN source:HP Photosmart 5520 TWAIN".

Are we running out of ideas ?

Might be a good idea to uninstall the current driver first, since it may be corrupted. windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/add-or-remove-a-scanner

Hello Mikkh,

I have already just downloaded a later version of Abbyy but still the same problem.

The Abbyy softwear operates via the HP 5520 Printer/Scanner.

Description
One of the following error message appears during scanning: "Cannot open TWAIN source" or "The parameter is incorrect."

Solution
Follow the instructions below to fix this problem:

Start ABBYY FineReader.
Open the File menu and select the Select scanner item.
The Driver drop-down list should contain several scanner drivers. Try scanning an image using each one of them. Finding a scanner driver that successfully produces a scanned image without causing an error solves the problem.
If all of the scanner drivers produce errors, use the TWAIN_32 Twacker application to check if your scanner's drivers are working properly.

Exit ABBYY FineReader.
Download Twack_32.zip.
Unpack the archive you've just downloaded and install the Twacker application by double-clicking Twack_32.exe.
Open the File menu in TWAIN_32 Twacker and select the Acquire item.
Click the Scan button in the dialog that appears.
If Twacker successfully scans an image, one of your scanner's drivers is working properly. Find out which one it is by opening the File menu in Twacker and selecting the Select Source item. The driver used for the successful scan will be indicated in blue. Select the same driver in ABBYY FineReader and try scanning. If ABBYY FineReader still produces an error, please contact the technical support service.
If Twacker couldn't scan an image, the drivers for your scanner aren't working properly. In this case you should update or re-install your scanner's drivers. You can contact the technical support service of your scanner's manufacturer for help with re-installing the drivers for your scanner.

Hi Jojo,

I have just opend the File menu but there is not an item "Select scanner item" to click on.

I have downloaded Twack_32.zip, unzipped it and I now have Twack_32.exe. I have double clicked and on the "File" in TWAIN_32 Twacker and selected the "Acquire item". I then get a message "Unknown Return Code".

So frustrating !!!!!!!

Somewhere you have a piece of corrupted code relating to your Twain driver. I know Vista had a history of problems with Twain, but beyond that I'm afraid I don't know much more.

I did use Vista for a very short time and frankly hated it. I installed it several times until the installer expired. Can't say was was very upset about it.

All I know is, you need to remove all the software related to Twain and re-install. How that is doen in Vista I don't know and can't find much information.

However, Vista was so unstable I doubt anyone would say either of those is particularly safe. They may be, but I just don't know.
