I upgraded my Intel Atom dual core 1.5 GHz, 2 GB RAM, HP mini netbook from Windows 7 to Windows 10 Pro x 64. Apart from Windows Updates and my security ware, I've only installed MS Office 2003. So its a pretty bare OS, without any special photo editing software. When I read this post, I plugged in my camera to see what happened. I was lucky and Windows gave my camera a drive letter, I didn't have to go into Disk Management and give it a letter. I simply made myself a folder and copied and pasted the photos I wanted to it.
I haven't done a lot with Windows 10, but I've not had any problems with it. Although the layout is a little bit different, it doesn't work much different to Windows 7. Whatever you can do with Windows 7, just carefully do the same with Windows 10 and dont let the layout throw you.
Good luck.

My installation was the free one as well, only I upgraded from Windows 7 and not Windows 8. My other computers run Windows 7 Pro x 64. I found Windows 7 Pro x 86 worked better than 64 bit on my netbook, but Windows 10 x 86 was crap. I then installed Windows 7 Pro x 64 and upgraded that, it works fine. Thats why there are very few programs on the computer. I'm sticking with Windows 7 on the main computers, I upgraded the mini just to try Windows 10. I thought it might work better than Windows 7 on a small computer. My desktop and laptop are both very powerful and can handle the large Windows 7 OS. The mini has been jacked up as much as it can be, but still doesn't amount to much and Windows 10 is a little bit faster. To me Windows 7 Pro is as good as it gets, I tried Windows 8.1 and got rid of it in double quick time. I can get by using Windows 10 on the mini, I dont use it very often and never for photo editing.
