I am sure I sent this message a few minutes ago, but it has not appeared, so here it is again. I am running Puppy V 5.7.0 off an USB Stick and it just crashed. I am attaching the picture of the monitor in the hope that it means something to you. Is there something that I can do to recover Puppy? Any idea what caused this? Many thanks, Alex

not syncing VFS (virtual file system) seems to suggest the USB stick is corrupt, unless it's copied to RAM first, then it could be a RAM stick that has developed a fault
You need to test it in another machine to verify which one it is. If it does the same thing then obviously the USB stick is the prime suspect. I don't use that method if I can help it because even branded ones can prove unreliable in the long run, and if that is the problem I've no idea how to fix it.
If it works in a different machine, then the problem is potentially easier to solve by changing the RAM
The VFS message might also be referencing an internal hard drive, especially if it's had Linux partitions on previously. You could try unplugging it as a first step just to rule that one out

Thank you Mikkh. I unplugged all the hard drives and tried that USB and it crashed again with exactly the same "message" as above. It happens almost instantly after the opening Puppy Slacko logo that I think it does not have time to copy anything to RAM. I also have Puppy installed on another, smaller USB Stick of 4 GB and that one is working OK and has done so for a long time. I also carried an experiment by having both USB Sticks plugged in and starting Puppy from the smaller USB that still works. It gave the choice of Slackosave files to use. One on the smaller USB that works and the other on the one that is crashing. I selected the Slacksave from the corrupt USB and it worked OK and saved to it at the end of the session and that means that I can recover all the personal data. I then copied the Slacksave file from the corrupt USB to another very large one (64GB), which also contains pictures and other non-Linux files. Then, booting Puppy from the smaller USB I was able to use Slacksave from this other USB and save to it. So, slacksave.2fs need not be on the same USB where Puppy is installed. I assume it could be even on a HD.
I think the best thing to do now is to format the crashing USB and use it for something else.
Thanks again for your help.
Alex

Well, I formatted the USB and used Rufus to install Puppy again. I suspected that it was Firefox that was causing the crashes, so I installed Chrome and set it as the default browser. I have not had a single crash since and I think that Chrome is faster than Firefox. Firefox is part of the bundled packages and I have not found a way to un-install it. It would release some space if I could, so if there is a way to do it, I'd be grateful for instructions.
Many thanks,
Alex

You need Chrome to get a more up to date Flashplayer, it's still not the latest with Puppy, but any newer version is good. puppylinux.org/wikka/HowToUninstallBrowsers are not that big and any space reclaimed would be minimal, so I wouldn't even go down that road myself unless it was desperate to save a few MB's
