On my laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium I am getting seven updates most days but only two are successful and the remaining five "fail" Is there a solution to this?

I switched off W7 updates months ago. Stupid nuisance. Most are related to office issues that have nothing to do with us.
While you're at it, there's a load of services you can also switch off, improving performance enormously.
Though W7 will never be as zippy as XP.
Hopefully some decent versions of Linux will be along soon, that actually work. SteamOS is on its way for those of us who really do want to conquer the universe.

Start> Control Panel > Windows Update > Change Settings > Select from drop down, Never Check For Updates. (not recommended) Highly recommended Also, remove the ticks from the two boxes.

With or without Updates, Windows 7 isn't slower than XP. Its a bigger OS and needs more poke to run it, so it will be slower if your trying to run it on a machine built for XP. Installed on a modern machine with a decent amount of RAM, it will run just as fast if not faster than XP.
