I get given lots of PC related items, most of it either gets scavenged for parts or finds it's way into my bin, but there are also 'maybe useful one day' items I keep - just in case!
There's many little success stories I could tell, but this latest one has pleased me more than most just recently
I'd already acquired a cheap 10 MP camera for some ridiculous price from 'cash generator' I think I paid £4 or £5 for it because it had no USB lead or case. it's an Agfa one who use their own non standard USB lead and maybe that's why it was so cheap or just because most people quite happily use their phone camera nowadays. Turns out it's a nice little camera that takes more than 3 shots before running out of juice. It wasn't that long ago when 10 MP was the best you could get and this is a real 10 MP with optical zoom, not some cheap tacky digital trickery pretending to be 10 MP
Shortly afterwards I was given an oldish HP Photosmart printer because he had upgraded to a wireless one and was getting sick of paying HP's ink prices. I've had it for months and finally got round to finding some cheap compatible ink for it. It takes 5 separate colours and a black and HP originals cost anything from £25 - £40 for one complete set, depending where you get it from. I found 2 sets of colours and 4 blacks for £5.60 (post free) on Ebay and decided to take a chance on them. They work great (after dismissing the dire warnings about it invalidating my (non existent) warranty)
I'd been using an ancient noisy Epson for my limited printing needs, so this was quite a big step up for me with it's separate photo tray, card reader and other little niceties the old Epson was missing
The card reader solves the problem of the missing camera lead, so that now becomes usable too
Not bad for just over a tenner
I was given several packets of 6x4 glossy photo paper years ago and they appear fine despite living in a drawer for years. I printed half a dozen or more test photos out and the quality is great, almost silent and reasonably fast, compared to the Epson anyway.
If I could find a use for 20+ AGP Graphics cards, I'd be even happier
