Hi, and a very Happy New Year. I still use my old dialup connection with Freeserve. I don't actually dial up, but have set up Thunderbird to collect emails on Pop3. However, I believe that I have to actually dial up the connection once every 90 days to keep it alive and I have just tried it. The number is/was 0844 058 7000 and I am now getting "number not recognized" response. Does anyone know what has happened to that service and how to get a new number?
Many thanks,
Alex

Thank you for that, Mikkh. It seems that the email will continue to work, but I cannot upload anything to the website without the dialup. Yes, jojo! That is my first email address; circa 1998 and I still have the computer on which I used it, but it now runs Win98, not Win95 that it had originally. Thanks again,
Alex

As I recall, it was one of the first free services. For a short time, it became quite popular among the more progressive building companies. (I was in building at the time).
I'm wracking what's left of my brain trying to remember some other. I didn't use Freeserve because I'd managed to get another, which seemed to have a much cooler name. I can't for the life of me remember what it is.
They had a rather primitive forum community. I made the mistake of logging in with my real name and saying something about how good 8 bits were, my Beeb in particular. I ended up being hassled for a short time by some guy who managed to get my phone number and decided to call me repeatedly to continue the argument.
But tonight, when I'm fast asleep, I'll suddenly wake with the name on my mind and won't get back to sleep again!

Jojo, There were many free dialup services :Lycos, Beeb, Tesco, Financial Times to name just a few. I still use Tesco, but they too discontinued free websites and Lycos and Beeb disappeared altogether.

Thanks Alex.
I dug out my old net log book, (yes, I keep a log, how sad is that!!!)
The one I was thinking of was X-Stream.There was also LineOne which I seem to recall was a BT effort. Breathe.net
Ah, memories.
I was watching an ancient episode of Callan on YouTube the other day. Some young person comes on, admits he wasn't born when Callan was on then proceeds to say it is boring.
I mean to say, reality TV has a lot to answer for.

Whilst the dialup connection was available, I had to use it to upload files to the website, which became a bit of a pain with 56K modem. But now that the dialup connections have been discontinued, I can upload files to the website in PCLinuxOS Linux Minime using gFTP and in WinXP and Win7. As I can still collect emails via Pop3, the service is actually better now. Thanks for your help, Alex
