I understand that one does not necessarily need Windows Defender if an alternative a/v program is installed. I have Windows 7 premium at the moment and find it somewhat irritating to have a Windows Update to cancel every day, can this be removed?

Thanks Mikkh, I have this installed but I am afraid I don't know what to do with all the various options to remove Defender totally?

The best way to turn off Windows Defender and any other useless M$ service is in Services.
It's called Windows Defender there, Right click, Proprieties, use the drop down to never.
Hi mikkh, good to see you.

Jojo - Is this where I need to be, if so where do I go from here, I just don't want to make a mistake and lash up the machine?

You don't need to remove it, it's tiny anyway, so you won't really gain anything by removing it - if it's even possible
If you follow the link I posted, it should be disabled already in Windows Defender properties after you've rebooted - if it's not set it to disabled as jojo said
It's one of the first things I do when setting up Windows for people

I use the services method because it gives me total control. I'm sorry to say I don't trust the M$ method. I back up all turned off services by turning them off in Services as well. For example, some program try to turn on Windows update. If it is only turned off in Options they can do this quite easily. But if it's off in Services, they can't. In XP, I have noticed a difference. Another point is, when the services is turned off in Services, the flies don't load at startup. If you look at Task Manager before and after, you will see this, but often, simply turning it off in Options, it will still load. I'm always open to correction, especially from mikkh who has a ton more knowledge and experience than I. But that's my reasoning for what it's worth. Buzzy. Re-reading your last post, Yes, on the line where it says: StartUp Type Automatic(Delayed Start), click the down arrow and in the drop down box, select Disabled. Then click Apply, then restart. Note. I have never had any serious problems turning off services. The worst mistake ony stopped me accessing the net until I turned somehting back on. The most important rule in adjusting your services is to do one at a time, then restart. It make sense really, but not always as obvious.
