At least Flame is not damaging to the system, if you want to log keystrokes you dont want the computer user to know your there. I dont know anything about Flame, so I dont have any answers as to what to do about it. However you still need an AV to safeguard against the normal viruses, which will destroy your system and you are more likely to get anyway. I think Flame is designed for financial institutions, not Joe average computer user. Like most of these things, they like to put the frighteners on the public and there is absobloodylutely no reason for it.

The impression I get from the article is that it is accepting that AV programs are simply not working any more. I tried, for a shot while, doing without AV altogether and it was successful for a time then the Virus writes returned. Most AV program now try to bundle their product with tool bars and such and pester you to buy whatever, with popups. Even Zone Alarm comes with a Firewall and offers of tool bars. Yet they aren't working. One of the problem I see are sites that seem to tolerate the malware programs. When MSN closed, most sites seemed to migrate to proboards, but a few to Yuku. On Yuku pages now it is almost routine to have the page you are reading, hijacked by various sites, telling you an urgent download of Flash is needed or some other Urgent download. The pages are almost always a good fake version of what might be expected from these companies, complete with logos and such. I contacted Yuku customer support, with a screen image and no response. It is significant that these are never stopped by any of my anti-malware programs, either on W7 or XP, but they have very occasionally, been blocked by Firefox! Steam is another that intrudes. One of the most popular game engines, it regularly hassles people for some new game, slowing computers to an almost halt. Below, a page Hijack while on Yuku, this one for FireFox.

I clicked on that link Jojo and my old fashioned, outdated, good for nothing AV blocked it as being full of bugs.

But the point is, we are all save because we are so very smart. We can know these are scams, and what to do about them.
Most computer users are not.
Even M$ is bundling stuff with its software now.
Wandering around assuming that, since we know better, then anyone who doesn't doesn't matter, simply demonstrates we are really not as smart as we think.
These scam and virus writers do what they do because they make money. Because there will be some mug out there who succumbs and the scams make a load of cash.
The means the scammers will continue and eventually we will be brought down by our own hubris.
So, carry on. It doesn't affect you so it doesn't matter.

I think I'll stay with AVG; I've been using it for well over ten years and rarely had any problems - and those I have had were my own bloody fault. IF and when I do start getting this sort of problem I'll have another look at it - and hopefully by then the AV/AS writers will have caught up with the newer varieties of cyber threats.
