She accepts that some systems do this, but is there a fairly easy cure?

It ios probably that your friend has the PC configured for American keyboard. If she has Windows XP installed then it just a matter of going to the Control Panel, selecting the Regional and Language Options, at resultant window select the English United Kingdom in both the drop down menus that are shown. Then click Apply
