I am running PCLinuxOS and I have almost run out of space in Root, so it will not update. I can re-install with larger Root and before I do that I would like to save Firefox bookmarks. How do I do that, please. Many thanks, Alex

In a bid to be one size fits all, Linux has lots of manual pages in practically every language in the world. This is obviously taking up room on the hard drive and while it's nothing to worry about for most people, it's a quick fix to get some hard drive space back if you're running low You need to run a program called 'bleachbit' (preferably using the "as root" option) to do this. It's the minimalist Linux equivalent to 'ccleaner' and once you've found 'localizations' and ticked that, you should be good to go. www.howtogeek.com/116971/7-tips-to-get-the-most-out-of-bleachbit-a-ccleaner-for-linux/That is a rather long winded explanation for Ubuntu users, but the principles are mostly the same apart from Ubuntu's annoying elevated privileges paranoia You should save at least half a GB doing this if you've never run it before, possibly a bit more Removing unwanted programs is another option, but Linux programs are very compact and tiny by comparison to Windows programs and the only real space killer is OpenOffice/LibreOffice and it's variants Be careful when uninstalling Linux programs though, some will have dependencies on other programs and removing them could cause other programs to malfunction. OpenOffice can be removed cleanly I think though. Another more brutal option would be to install the 'minime' version and only add the programs you definitely use. I got mine down to less than 5 GB doing this - 12 GB+ is used by a standard PClinuxOS install, so that's quite a saving but requires a bit of work afterwards. And don't forget Linux is quite happy to read and write to Windows partitions, so any downloads can be moved and shouldn't be kept in Linux if space is tight

Thank you Lynnrose and Mikkh. I have saved the favourites in Firefox, but the option to remove unvanted programmes is interesting and I will try it before I re-install. Many thanks,
Alex

I tried bleachbit and still it would not update, so I reinstalled with a much bigger Root, but I did not go well. Synaptic tell me that I have 2 broken files and to use Broken Filter to fix them, but no instructions as to where this broken filter is in the system. Any ideas? Thank you,
Alex
