Hiya, very often the fan keeps running, its not in a direct sunlight / heat area so shouldn`t be external influences causing it,any ideas why this keeps happening please, All the vent areas are clear, no dust etc. cheers copey.

I had something similar to this on my desktop and tried a routine to set the speed and the temp of my fans. Then someone reliable asked me if I actually knew what I was doing? I'm ashamed to say I didn't and admitted as such. I removed the routine. Kinda a round about way of saying, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. To take the point further. My desktop was running very hot for a while. I even fitted a huge fan onto the side of the case which involved cutting 5 x 32mm holes and edging these with electrical edging. Finally, I connected the fan to one of the fan ports. Eventually I discovered that the problem was my graphics card was on its way out. Once replaced, (with the cheapest I could find, which also worked brilliantly), the overheating disappeared and I now have a huge fan on the side of my case. Sadly, since I don't need to run it any more, it does gather a lot of dust. But that's how we learn.

On a desktop you can set the fans, I keep mine running all the time and its water cooled. Laptops are different, they dont have the best of cooling anyway. Age can make a difference, modern chips dont get as hot as they did a few years ago. Power settings could make a difference, are you running on Saver or Performance?? My Intel i7 quad cuts out even on Performance; my old Intel Core 2 Duo, runs all the time on Performance and its got a bigger fan. Modern fans are better to and size can be deceiving. If its a new machine, I would be looking for a reason. Price can make a difference as well, you get what you pay for. There is a big difference between adequate cooling and good cooling.

Following on from ken's constructive advice, I recall, back when I used a laptop, the fan tended to run a lot more when I was using highly graphical stuff. Especially animation.
