I have a Seagate external drive that does not show up when I start my system up. Its plugged in and the light is on. However, if I go into the device manager, it shows up under disk drives and when I click properties it says the device is working properly. Any ideas Btw, The drivers are up to date!

Right click on Computer, select Manage, Disk Manager. Right click on the drive and select Change Drive Letter; click Add and it will suggest a letter. OK it if you want it, or change it to something else. If drives are plugged in one at a time, the Manager will always suggest E:/ if D:/ is the DVD/CD drive. This causes confusion if more than one is plugged in and you have to go through this every time. Its best to assign a different letter for each drive, then the computer knows what its doing if more than one drive is plugged in.

All that shows in Disk management is "Disk2 unknown, Not Initialized" 3.86gb Unallocated. The Seagate should show 1TB.

If there is nothing on the disk that you need, go back into Disk Management and format it. Its not a disk you have been using for Linux is it?? Without formatting there could be several reasons its not reading it right. If its a SATA drive make sure the data cable is in good and tight with no kinks in the cable. If it an old IDE drive, make sure the jumper is set to Slave.

Thank you Viking for your reply. I can't see Seagate in the Disk Management, only "disk2 not initialized" and when I try to initialize it, I get a message saying "could not be performed because of a I/O DEVICE ERROR" Also the drive is making a beeping sound like "This vehicle is reversing" !

I have a seagate drive but haven't had this problem. Are you sure your USB ports are not turned off?
But to be honest, it sounds like there's a fault with your drive.

If its a USB drive, try sticking it in another hole. If your trying it in a front panel, it might work round the back. You dont say if its a 3.5" or 2.5". Some USB ports dont have enough juice to run a 2.5" without extra power. When there was a lot of USB1 around, USB drives had an extra connector. Now they only come with one connection and its not always enough.

Which version of Windows are you using? 3.86 GB sounds more like a 4 GB pen drive you plugged in once - which some earlier versions of Windows mistakenly report as still being plugged in. I don't like starting Windows or Linux with any external drives already switched on myself, as it can cause problems and slows the boot process. I prefer to switch it on after the OS has loaded - if I should need it
