my mate s page file usage is 1.12 gb ok if he dident have only 512 ram, as you can imagine this as slowed his computer down to a crawl. i think the main culprit is aol software hogging resources even though he connects to the web using bt. i have tried add remove programes but very slow. any ideas thanks

If you load AOL anytime when you are online then if your PC running very slow its p[ossible that you still have waol.exe running, check with task manager and if its in the list of processes then right click it and click end process. It doesn't happen all the time, I get it occasionally but that cures slowness Graham

he had deleted aol and wasnt running in the taskmanager. i noticed vsmon.exe was using 25k in taskmanager. part of zonealarm. how come his computer goes from 168kpagefile usage on basic(msconfig) diagnostic start up to 1.31gb on normal start up. how do i identify what is using all this memory, especially as cpu usage only fluctuates between 10 and 40 per cent? thanks

You've just identified it IMO - Zone Alarm !
I know a few swear by it, but i swear at it, as it always proves a huge resource hog on every PC I've tried it on.
Better to use a hardware firewall (router) anyway and forget all about software firewalls

Is there any need for me this firewall or shall I turn it off?

You will find it less bother to leave it turned on and it dont use much in the way of resources. You only need to turn it off, if your running a 3rd party software firewall. Then its less bothersome to turn it off.
