I read that online safety advice on MSN headlines yesterday. The 2 things that should have been top of the list, ( Antivirus and Firewall ) were right at the bottom. Everything else was how to secure stuff that you must be stupid for running in the first place. The first rule of staying safe; if something is on someone elses server, leave it there and dont import it onto your own. Avoid apps at all cost, ( thats what makes Windows 8 desktop so dangerous ) every app is a breach in your firewall. These so called shortcuts save you a couple of seconds, it can take hours to put your computer right after a virus attack. These days most people are using a router and have a hardware firewall, as long as its turned on you dont need a software firewall.
The 3 things to stay safe online: A Firewall, ( hardware or software ) an Antivirus and a bit of Common Sense.
If in doubt, ask someone you trust to know. There are lots of computer help groups that can be Googled, so you dont have to follow the first answer. Avoid nerd groups; they talk funny, because they dont know what the hell they are talking about.

VikingKen, I hear you, I do use windows 8.1 and like the stylised stardock products that I use, do like the return of start bar/menu because of that, and do like the i candy,I do boot to desktop rather stupid apps, I do wonder about the apps and do worry about the app situation, I can see where you come from, if used regular, it can be more than a problem. I do feel that there has been a major difference since windowsxp, and the core is more important to windows, and I have looked upon the windows 10 thing as well, that finally, they Microsoft have indeed might have something decent at last, since XP. I hear you stating that windows 10 is really good, if they brought out something with Windowsxp and windows 7, but the core being what it is today, and adding future support for hardware/software for older products by all means, that would make things easier, less updates to fix from last month, that infernal microsoft malicious tool, which is every month, which we do not need. I do not need the app, so what is the windows 10 going to offer, they have made mistakes, many, but are they going in the right direction, that is the question?Haggis. I hope I've spelt it right, hurray for the spellchecker
