I am running PCLinuxOS KDE 2013.10 and it cannot see my floppy drive. I have been in Configure Desktop>Detachable Devices and put a tick into "mount on boot", but when I go into Dolphin the floppy is not there. The Forum reply was that they "don't do floppies", yet the apps include Floppy Formatter, but that does not work either. I get a message: Internal error:device not correctly defined.
Is there something that I can download in Synaptic to correct this?
Best,
Alex

There's a new version out yesterday that might solve your problem, but I have to ask why you need a floppy drive at all. I kept a few for BIOS updates etc and although I do have a floppy drive in this case (I just update the innards and keep the case) I haven't had it physically attached to the motherboard for several years now. If yours does have a floppy drive properly rigged up, there's no reason it shouldn't work and be correctly (automatically) identified in Linux. It used to work fine when I did have it attached. If you've been inside the case, check you haven't dislodged or knocked the cable out distrowatch.com/?newsid=08198

It definitely is not disconnected because it works in Windows and Puppy. My previous PC, a Pentium I with Win.98 does not have USB ports and even Reed/Write CDs were a novelty then, so I saved lot of stuff on floppies. I have lots of blank floppies, so I tend to use them. Force of habbit more than necessity. I will download the new version and try it as soon as I get a new drive that I scrounged off a friend.

I've got two carrier bags full of blank floppies, or did have till recently but if they were full they'd all fit easily on another IT antique I have - a 512 MB USB stick.
I think I also saw an ISA card when I was rooting through my spares the other day, but even I admit the floppy is well and truly dead - and they're not even true floppies anyway, the real floppies were 5 1/4 inch proper bendy things or 8 inch which even I can't remember.
I remember my girlfriend asking what I wanted for my birthday about 10 years ago and we just happened to be passing a shop selling 256 MB USB sticks half price at the time - I said I'll have one of them £25 for 256 MB is an absolute bargain ! I bought a decent brand USB3 32 GB one for £18 about a month ago - how times change eh
