Louise
I don't know whether it's coincidence or not but I haven't been into Multiply for over a week (I have added comments from my Inbox) but in that time I have not received any Spam emails. Perhaps the secret is only comment and visit Multiply.

Ah and I thought it was Facebook harvesting the address books of my friends who are on it.

Angel
My guess is that many Facebook Users are also members of Multiply and find it easier to Harvest mail addys in Multiply and then Post from their own Sites in Facebook. Possibly fewer restrictions in Facebook on the content of their Pages (Porn, Sex Chat etc, etc).

I tend to think that the spammers see an ideal opportunity in the likes of Facebook and Multiply.
Think about it. These sites encourage people to share every aspect of your life with the world. A daily diary published online.
The spammers undoubtedly reason that some of the users will simply be rather lonely and gullible. The ideal customer to offer some nonsense to in exchange for their credit card details.
The way Microsoft effectively adopted Multiply, then sold all our personal MSN details to them was as astonishing as it was preposterous and outrageous!
Fortunately, most of the net thinks my name is Jo Jojo and I live in Hollywood California, zip code, 90210.
But I know many people put quite intimate details about themselves online.
And we also know that if the spammers get even 1 response out of 10 mil that is a success for them.
Thinking about this more, the net is increasingly affecting every aspect of our lives. It can make administration so much easier, cheaper, quicker and more efficient.
Yet it's being destroyed by spammers who use underhanded means to make money.
Organisations such as health services and the police find themselves spending hundreds of millions of slow, incompetent systems to beat the spammers and hackers. Much of this ultimately pointless, usually because they go to people who talk big words yet are just net con men like the spammers.
The major net organisations need to get serious about spam.
Microsoft's response is to do this! Microsoft have shown their true colours. Con men, looking to turn any fast buck.
Sadly, the only real alternative is Linux. While many say they are very happy with Linux, my experience, as a reasonably intelligent computer user who doesn't have the inclination to go too far beyond the basics of computer technology, Linux simply doesn't work.
Of if I want to get conspiratorial about it, it can't work while the same con men see it as yet another opportunity.
(I like to get the most depressing thoughts out first thing on a Monday in the hope that the week can't get any worse!!!!). ;D

I like SPAM, if I didn't get any I wouldn't hear from anybody and it would be like living on the dark side of the moon. Instead I have all these friends in Nigeria and Ivory Coast. Very generous friends too, always offering money. I dont accept, as I dont need it and I never go out to spend any.
I got a letter from the government today, saying they are giving me £25. 00, as it was below zero for a week. I'm going to write and tell them I dont want it, as my cave is 52º all the year round and I dont have heating anyway.
What a nice friendly place this planet is, I should have come here sooner.
