What I am looking for is a Linux Distro that will run live on a USB and allow me to save to the USB (links to Hotmail google etc)
I have found one that does what I want Knoppix 7.2, but I cannot figure out how to change the time !!

Right I found Peppermint which I installed to a USB, but somehow I have screwed up. Now my computer wants me to boot from the grub loader, which means that to boot into win 7 I have to have the usb in, naturally this is a PITA, anyone have any idea on how I sort it ? ETA I have sorted it though somehow I lost 880mb off a 8 gig pen, !!

Maybe a swap partition has been added by Linux, Windows is blind to any Linux partitions so it's probably not missing at all really. It could also be a hidden file.
Windows blindness means you'll have to use a Linux partition program to get the full capacity back under Windows

Wouldn't a windows install/repair disc be able to give access to a cmd prompt where you can repair the bcd file?

I managed to repair the windows boot and everything is hunky dory !!
By using Diskpart in Windows I was able to clean the USB and format it and have now retrieved the missing space
Thanks to all for your input
