Or can you choose the size of drives. My computer is divided into 7 drives of equal size My C: has only 368MB available space but 5 of the others have 2GB available. Is it possible to drag one of the other drives into the C drive? I moved the SWP file from C: to I: which helped. I have never used drives D,E,F,G or H. Can't remember why I subdivided in the first place. I just want this machine available for emergency backup from next week.

You need partitioning software to resize the C: drive, you cant do it with Windows. You can use Disk Management to delete some of the other drives and make new partitions out of the free space. You can have the drives any size you like, they don't have to be the same size. You can only make 4 primary partitions out of a hard drive. If you want more than that they have to be logical drives. Which is like one primary partition split up into smaller sections. You can pretty much do as you like, with drives that don't have the operating system installed. Without the proper software, you would have to reinstall Windows onto a new bigger partition. Then you would have to delete some partitions to the required size and install Windows in the free space. Its handy to have good partitioning software, but its not exactly cheap to buy.

I guess you used an old DOS program to partition? which has a 2 GB size limitation You need to use a more modern one like Paragons partition manager which has been given away free on several PC magazines just recently Or you could try the Linux live CD designed for that purpose www.download.com/Parted-Magic-LiveCD/3000-2094_4-10663999.html

Cheers Ken and mikkh. This is a Toshiba Tecra about 8 years old so it's practically antique but has never crashed or given any problems. I'll be in the 21st century by thursday so it's probably best to start afresh with the new computer but I have noted your advice for future ref. I'll start buying a PC mag again too as the CD's will be relevant. I have a drawer full of CD's from Net. mag from about 2000/4 with all manner of obscure out-of-date freeware.

I suspect the version of Paragon Partition Manager they are giving away is 2005. It a good program and it will resize your C: partition. It doesn't work with 64 bit though. I use version 2008 which does work with 64 bit, but I've not been able to install it on Windows 7. I use it to defrag W7, but while booted into XP 64 bit. Very handy having dual boot. Version 2005 does everything that 2008 will do, except on 64 bit. I expect they will bring out version 2010 as soon as W7 is launched and it will work on it. I dont think you will find it free in any mag though, well not for a couple of years or so.
