Got my BT hub today and decided to use the wired mode rather than wireless as I always go online from my desk. The Power, Broadband, Wireless, Phone lights are all glowing BLUE. The question is, could someone from another location use my hub signal or do I need to turn the wireless part of the hub off? I have the wireless switch on my laptop on 'OFF'. I'll probably be asking all manner of daft questions until I get the hang of it.

In theory, someone else COULD access your wireless network, so I'd recommend turning it off.

Cheers D1, I turned it off for the moment. I read that you can get much faster speeds with less interruption with a wired connection so I'll try it for a few days. Some useful info on BT hub 2.0 here. www.frequencycast.co.uk/homehubfaq.html

In answer to your thread title, no it doesn't, you can have both running at the same time
There should be wireless security settings like WEP or WPA encryption available, so it's only the very paranoid who need to switch it off entirely
.... and there's no reason why a wireless connection should be any slower than a wired one, unless you have a mega fast (and I'm talking 50 Mb+) connection. For mere humans there shouldn't be any difference

As mikkh says, if you have a password set there is really little chance of anyone getting in.
One point however, if you are cost conscious and have your computer on for any length of time, is that the unused wireless will consume power.
Might be only a bit but seems kinda pointless, bit like leaving a light on.
Mine uses 0.2Amps. That means 48 watts.
My computer is on for long periods, often all day. I have a row of switched sockets above my desk. Each item, Amp, monitor, printer, scanner, camera, are all pluged into their own socket.
When I'm not using something I switch it off. Often , printer, scanner for example, need to be disconnected at the Desktop first of course.

The laptop has WPA encryption. I never move it so wired is no hassle. Turn it back on when I need it. Can't remember the last time I printed anything and have never scanned. The only thing I want to do now is play online poker. I am a member of The Sportsman and Grosvenor casinos in London but recently they are looking a bit tatty. So much more comfortable to play from home. Maybe win a seat at a table on the world poker tour!!! Not too bothered about power usage. It seems having the hub on full blast costs about £10 a year and you can set it to BT Power Save for those time when it's not going to be used.
Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean no-one is using your signal.
