I have just received an urgent message from my son to say that the latest Microsoft Update for Vista seems to have lost around 20Gb of data files and folders.
On trying to roll back to prior to update the recovery points have been lost.
On trying to run any programs still accessable it seems to show that they are being run for first time, indicating registry corruption.
Under User He has lost all his emails and address book, many folders still exist but they are empty of files
My son is very computer literate and is capable of sorting out most problems. No new software has been loaded recently and he maintains good anti virus and spyware systems. Scanning for problems doesn't report any.

Do you know the number of the Vista update that caused the problem?
Control Panel > Security > Windows Update > View Update History
I have an update marked as 'IMPORTANT' (KB940510) and forewarned is forearmed.
Automatic download of (KB961260) and 2 others went without a hitch this morning.

He didn't tell me what the update number was, as the PC is corrupted now. I have Emailed all my computer club members to make sure they do a backup of data before letting update run

Cheers Graham, I won't install it for now. The 'IMPORTANT' update (KB940510) is dated 6/05/08 so it's unlikely that's the problem one. Don't know why it wasn't already on my laptop as I only bought it on 2/02/09 The updates for 12/02/09 went without a hitch this morning. I'm still finding my way round Vista. I'll give my brother a buzz. He's a pro at this lark.

Yes, your 'Important' update is just a check to make sure you're using a legal version of Vista - I'm surprised they didn't mark it 'critical' actually
I tend to just install the major SP's then switch updates off.
Onto the original problem.... Not a lot you can do about that, apart from complain bitterly to Micro$oft, where it will undoubtedly fall on deaf ears
A Linux 'live CD' may help in recovering lost data files, but he's probably looking at a fresh install to correct the problem - and the purchase of an external drive to make sure it doesn't happen again

Vista updates can be very intrusive, today I was working on my graphic program, and the computer just blacked out and promptly started to do a restart for computer update. What a cheek...........shall have to turn them off again. Pete.

Download Windows 7 Pete and upgrade your Vista. You will already have all the right drivers in and you wont ever want to go back to Vista again.

How much does that cost Ken?

The trial can still be downloaded for free for another few days Pete. You can get Ultimate 32 or 64 bit versions from Microsoft download site. They say the final release could be on sale as soon as July. The program works fine, but the hardware companies still need to improve their drivers. I'm running the 64 bit version on both my laptop and this computer. They are both dual boot with XP as well.
