I mentioned this prob on another thread a few days ago; when flipping between threads on the site, every time I try to change the page I get an error message that says " Internet Explorer cannot open internet site (URL). Operation aborted". The silly thing is that if I hit the OK button, the page reverts to the last one; however, if I kill it with the top 'X' button the requested page comes up without any further ado. The other thing is that it only seems to affect Proboards sites like this one and NHI - everything else functions normally. Any ideas, people?

Not had that particular problem with these sites John, but I normally use MSN Premium for Proboards. MSN 11 or whatever it is, is founded on IE8. The browser has not been upgraded for quite a while now, only the mailbox has been messed with a little bit. However this last week or so, I have been logged out when changing between this site and NHI, but hitting the refresh button usually logs me back in. I might sign in again at times and then it seems to settle down and I can shuttle back and forth without having to sign in. Its not always like it, just now and again. There has been all kinds of weird things going on lately though, like people being locked out and me having to change the settings to let them back in. Touch wood the NHI control panel seems to be alright at the moment. These sites have never been the easiest sites to manage, but lately NHI has been a right pain in the arse.

Thanks for that, Ken - good to know I'm not on my own with this one! I thought I'd cracked it this morning, TBH; I went into network properties and found that the onboard NIC was enabled, and as the system has a Gigabit PCI NIC fitted, I disabled the OBC. All seemed good for a while, but after 45 minutes or so I noticed that the internet connection flag on the taskbar had gone dark - usually bright blue - and although both flags were indicating that they were connecting, the fault returned. Just to clarify, there are two flags - one for the Gigabit card and one for the router upstairs, so although the indications are that the router's the cause of it, according to Windows, the other PC on the system doesn't have any problems whatever - it remains connected at 1 Gb/Sec. I haven't made any changes at all to the system over the past few months, so I'm scratching my head over this one! Could I simply download IE8 again, and maybe do a repair on it, or is it going to be a reformat reinstall of Windows?

Proboards is playing up for me tonight John, both sites are not loading very well. Your problem sounded very similar to one I had a few days back, but mine was a wireless connection. Bloody neighbour bought a new wireless device, set it up on an open network and it took me ages to figure out what was going on. I figured out the cure, but not why it should have happened exactly. Unless you have a particular reason to have the PCI card, I would take it out and use the onboard. I was using double cards on my server, when wireless belonged to high end laptops. All would be well for a while, then the shyte would hit the fan and it was a major operation to sort out. I cant remember what I was doing, but it was very Heath Robinson and worked after a fashion. The only lesson I learnt from it was dont add a network card if you all ready have one. Mine was different as the server was connected to two networks, but the fault was having a second card. After I abandoned the crazy network; I continued to use the additional card, disabled the onboard and the breakdowns continued until I removed it. Hardware never ceases to amaze me, do you disable unused hardware, or leave it enabled?? It varies from computer to computer and there is no particular rule. I think its best to leave it, unless the computer tells you otherwise. This normally only happens when adding high speed graphics to a board with built in graphics.
Built in modems used to play havoc with computers using BB, but thats a thing of the past. I use both wireless on my network and 3 Mobile when out and about. Neither conflicts with the other and both Mini Two and Mirtle will use my network when its in range and 3 Mobile when its out of range. If for some reason I want to use 3 Mobile while my network is in range, I simply hotkey the wireless off. That dont happen very often, only when I'm experimenting with some idea or another.

Well Ken, I've reformatted this PC (the AMD 4450e rig) and installed W7 Ultimate x64, but I'm still getting that god-d**ned error message up whenever I try to change pages - it's really getting on my tits now! I only get it on this site and NHI - and just to confuse the plot even further, it doesn't happen on ANY of my other PC's - just this one. Is there a setting in Inet Properties somewhere that I've overlooked perhaps?

This site was playing up a bit earler John, but its OK now. Its not throwing up any messages though. Whatever is causing it, I would think must be in the servers and not in your OS. I'm not changing anything in Internet Options so I cant see why you would have to. I'm running Pro and Ultimate, in the past I have run Home and Starter. I've never had change Internet Options with any of them.

Just to put this one to bed, finally; as you know I had some problems with IE8 while back, and I couldn't upgrade to IE9 because a "critical update" was missing from IE8. Depite trying my best to get aforesaid update - even from the M$ website - the download failed because "that" update was missing and Windows couldn't "read" it! So, in true mechanics' fashion, I said bollox to it and tried another workround - installed Chrome as my default browser and tried to download said update; it downloaded fine, but still wouldn't install - in fact, it bluescreened and rebooted. So, I'm left with Chrome as my one and only (useable) browser; happily enough, I quite like it now that I'm used to it, and I don't get any of those silly error messages telling me what I already know - that IE has been carefully manipulated to stop anyone still running XP from accessing the internet. Another nail in Microsoft's coffin - when will they learn?
