I have tested Puppy Slacko 5.3, Lupy and Puppy Slacko 5.3.3 in an attempt to find O/S to serve all my needs. Slacko 5.3 is booted from a CD and saved onto an USB stick. The other 2 are on DVDs. I have a fairly recent Epson Stylus Office BX535WD which is connected by WiFi. Only Slacko 5.3.3 recognizes it. The other two don't see it at all, not even when it is connected with USB lead. None recognize the printer's scan facility, but default to ye olde Canon Lide 20.
So, as far as surfing the net, sending and receiving emails, using the word processor and printing, Puppy Slacko 5.3.3 works for me and I could live without Windows.
However, none of the three recognize my mobile. Lupu does not recognize the camera either. Both Puppy Slackos recognize the camera and let me see the contents of its SDHC in Vviewnior, but do not allow me to save the images. The save button is greyed out and I tried everything to re-activate it without success. The only way to save a picture onto another media is to use Gimp and that takes ages. There is no facility that I could find to download the entire content of the camera's SDHC and that is about the only feature I would need whilst on holiday. That reduces its use as a portable system to a point where it would be easier to buy another SDHC.
Having said that, it is very impressive to so many good features in such a small O/S.

Wary Puppy is built from a "Puppy builder" system named Woof (http://bkhome.org/woof), which can build a Puppy Linux distribution from the binary packages of any other distro. There are many "puppies" built with Woof, including Lucid, Wary, Racy, FatDog, and Slacko. Each "Puppy distro" built by Woof is a distinctive distribution in its own right, with unique features. You choose a puppy based on your particular needs, be it specific hardware, software, or access to and compatibility with the package repositories of a particular major distro. distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/racy-5.3/release-Racy-5.3.htmBasically Lucid tries to have some compatibility with Ubuntu, Wary is especially for older hardware, while Racy is for very new hardware. Slacko has compatibility with Slackware and Fatdog is 64 bit I don't have specific hardware needs like you, I run a pretty old Epson warhorse for a printer and never attach my mobile phone or take that many pictures with my camera either so I tend to use Lucid or Fatdog based Puppies and a selection of the others for working on other peoples computers. You might find a Racy based one more suitable for you

Thank you Mikkh. I downloaded Racy and tried it on DVD. It is the first Puppy that recognized my printer, both to print and scan. Still no facility to download pictures off the camera or to save individual pictures.
The biggest problem and one that I failed to resolve is that the desktop is shifted about 20mm to the left, so I have an empty strip on the right and cannot quite see all the apps on the left. My screen resolution is 1280X1024 and I got it to that using VESA, but I cannot shift it to the right.
Thanks again,
Alex

Further to an earlier message, I have found a way to transfer pictures from camera and 'phone. If both the camera and the receiving media are mounted, dragging and dropping the entire directory works fine. I have thus transferred the contents of camera SDHC onto a very old HD formated as NTFS and I can see the pictures in both Puppy and Windows. This does not with with the mobile as Puppy does not see it as a drive, but it works if I plug the mobile's micro SD into a card reader. Pictures can be copied onto Puppy DVD, provided that there is enough room, but not to another DVD. I suspect I need another CD/DVD drive to do that. Alex
