I'm very pleased with myself.. I'm doing this with Linux Puppy that you recommended to me Mikkh. It's all very strange, but quite pleasing. I've disconnected my two hard drives and running on the CD. So far my computer hasn't cut out, so maybe it's my hard drive.

Why is it titled 'Windows 7', it should be Windows 0 Linux 1 surely ;o)
Puppy is a great Linux 'distro' with many features the others could learn from and all packed into a little over 100MB - most others require the whole CD of 700MB or need to be on a DVD even.
With hard drive prices still artificially high, it's cheaper and more secure to use Puppy and a USB flash drive to store settings/files on. Current price for a 16 GB flash drive is about a tenner

you are of course right. Could I ask a question ? I was getting quite often messages from Internet Explore saying it was not working. And If I was doing some downloading, this would stop the download and I would have to start all over again, and If It happened while I was downloading Windows updates, I would see error messages that some updates could not be installed. Which made me wonder, could Internet Explorer be the cause of my computer shutting down? I didn't think to mention it before. I have since installed Firefox and have crossed my fingers.

Well done sweetheart It's 2-0 to Linux now, my brother in law phoned up and said Windows wasn't letting him access the internet and a call to VirginMedia resulted in nothing more than a feeble 'it might be your Ethernet port or drivers' excuse I told him to boot off the Linux CD I gave him previously - voila! one working connection instantly, proving nothing was ever wrong with Ethernet port.

If it was XP you were using, the error comes from IE 6 which is part of the default XP install and is fixed by installing 7 or later - assuming you want IE that is.
Better to install an alternative like you did. And no I don't think that was part of the problem myself
