2nd April 1860
The Pony Express, a new faster mail service using riders on a horseback relay instead of the traditional stagecoaches, commenced service between St. Joseph, Mo., and Sacramento, Calif. The Pony Express reduced the time for mail to travel from the Atlantic and Pacific coasts to around ten days. After only 1 year in March 1861 after suffering large losses and not gaining the mail contract The Pony Express Company ceased trading.

3rd April 1913 English suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst was sentenced to 3 years in prison for inciting supporters to place explosives at the London home of British politician David Lloyd George. The Home Secretary banned all future public meetings of suffragettes.

-the first public performance of Beethoven’s third symphony, Eroica, at the Theater-an-der-Wien in Vienna, Austria. Legend has it that Eroica was to be dedicated to Napoleon who Beethoven had very much admired – until he crowned himself Emperor in 1804, inspiring the composer to scratch through the dedication. Beethoven conducted for this performance.

At just after 0700BST, Major Yuri Alexeyevich Gagarin was fired from the Baikonur launch pad in Kazakhstan, Soviet central Asia, in the space craft Vostok (East). Major Gagarin orbited the Earth for 108 minutes travelling at more than 17,000 miles per hour (27,000 kilometres per hour) before landing at an undisclosed location.
