Hello everyone. Last week lots of awful messages were sent to my contacts from my MSN hotmail account. needless to say they weren't from me! I did all my scans but nothing showed up apart from the usual tracking cookies but I remember earlier in the day that a message had flashed up saying that a trojan horse had been blocked. It happened again this morning as soon as I logged on (there were lots of postmaster failure messages in my inbox but the messages have been seen as my daughter contacted me) so I have updated Avast and will scan again with all my tools. In the meantime, can anyone shed any light on what it can be - I don't visit dodgy sites as far as I'm aware Thank you, Julie.

Sounds like something is lurking Download and run combofix (only from the link below as I believe there are some rogue ones about) download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exeIt's just a one off cure for stubborn to remove nasties, it's not something that needs to be run on a regular basis and it's no use keeping the file for future use anyway because it's checks to see if it's the latest version when you run it. It would be a good idea to change you hotmail password too

I have managed to download from link on my laptop but can't download on to my desk top. IE says it has blocked file and gives me option to download which I accept but still nothing. Is the problem only with my hotmail account and will sorting on laptop have done everything I need to do? Sorry to sound dumb about this! And how did mail get sent out again later this morning when I wasn't even online??

Either try downloading using another browser like Firefox, Chrome or Opera - or download the file from another PC and use a USB stick or external hard drive to transfer it to the laptop. it's almost definitely an infection of some kind. You could also try starting in safe mode (with networking) but a wireless connection is often classed as a non essential driver by safe mode (safe mode only loads the barest essentials)
Change the password again but only after you have managed to run combofix successfully

Hello again! I have been away for the weekend but am on to it now - thank you! I have transferred to desktop from a USB stick and, unlike the laptop procedure which only took about 15 minutes, this has now been running for 40 and seems to be stuck. 60+ files were deleted and 7 folders but after the last one C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\WINDOWS, nothing seems to be happening. All the icons at the bottom of my desktop have disappeared and I don't know what's going on - on the laptop a log was shown at the end and everything went smoothly.

I presume it did finish eventually then? It can take a while on older systems with slow hard drives

Sorry for the late reply - no, I eventually had to abort it by removing the USB stick but everything seems ok. Had to ring Virgin as I lost internet connection but it's up and running now. I just have to work out why I lose it again every time I plug the router in Thanks again for the guidance.
