I am running WinXP SP3 and IE 8, which cannot display any pages. Error message is that this is probably caused by Firewall setting and that I should check HTTP port (80), HTTPS port (443) and FTP port (21). I am using windows firewal and also Microsoft Security Essentials for virus protection. Turning firewall off does not change anything.
No problems with Firefox - works fine.
Can anyone tell me what to do, please?
Thanks,
Alex

Forget IE is the obvious answer. You like to dabble in Linux where IE is unavailable, so why use it at all? - you can use Firefox in both.
IE 9 and future editions won't be available for XP, so you're going to finish up with an obsolete browser anyway if you stick to IE. Whereas future versions of Firefox will still work on XP

Thank you Mikkh. Good advice, I am sure. I have a very negative trait in that I must solve anything that is difficult, otherwise you could not be more right. I am using SeaMonkey in Puppy and it works perfectly. Thanks again, Alex

Mikkh, I found a solution on Internet. In IE go to <Tools><Internet Options>, click on Connections Tab and go to LAN Settings and untick everything there.
I have just done that and IE is working. Now I can forget all about it and continue using Firefox ;D.
