If you log out and choose 'mate' as the desktop, you get the more familiar Mint desktop

I used VMware Player to load an iso of 'Linux Mint 12' and finished up with an excellent looking desktop, but wihout any program icons. As far as I know I followed the instructions from 'ComputerAcitve' with regards the iso, but I don't know too much about using a DVD and starting the computer from there. Maybe Mikkh will tell me what I should be doing. (Please) Thanks for being able to get an opinion......Trrooper

Use the 'mint4win' file to install it on a Windows partition. Virtual machines are OK for a quick test, but as you're also using virtual hardware (including the graphics) you never get the real picture of what it's like - just a rough idea.
If you mount the ISO with daemon tools or similar, there's no need to burn it at all - if you want to use the 'mint4win' method that is, which *is* the best option for beginners. It creates a pseudo Linux file system inside a folder on a Windows drive and behaves exactly the same as a real install, using your real hardware. It can also be uninstalled from Windows
