Hi folks; just as an update after a long time not posting, here's a bit of an update on what I've been doing PC wise during the past year or so. My main PC - Athlon 64 3700 went to Chelmsley Wood to fund a major upgrade to an AM2+ board with a 7950 CPU and 4Gb of RAM, fed by a 1Tb Seagate SATA2 divvied up into 5 partitions, plus a Hitachi 500Gb unit dedicated to storage and backup. My 'project quad' double dualcore Opteron rig wasn't quite the success I'd hoped, although it was capable of some serious crunching; main problem was the memory controller on the Rioworks HDAMB board that only accessed main memory from CPU1 - a big bottleneck that proved the point that servers aren't necessarily the fastest machines around. I dismantled that one about a year ago, but for some reason nobody wanted to buy the bits so I kept them; just as well really, 'cos I've just bought a Tyan Thunder S2882 board that uses ECC Reg DDR400 and has open access to memory from both CPU's. It's been a bit of a faff to modify an old aOpen ATX case to take the eATX board, involving reducing the 5.25" basket to one slot only, but everything will fit nicely as far as I can judge it! Still on the scrapheap work-wise - could we expect anything else? Other than that, we're getting along OK so far - might be back on the Council next year with some luck. Take care, peeps!! JB.
