May have been altered (legitimately) by a security program (firewall probably) but at face value, they'll stop anything connecting that's not in the 'localhost' file

I'd get rid of both myself


That list of 04 programs (things that start with Windows) is possibly the worst I've ever seen - it must take 5 minutes to boot that lot !

It's not a case of what must go (which is nearly all of them) - it's which handful to keep

I'll research the few I don't know and post a list

Rather than advise msconfig, I'm thinking of suggesting Ccleaner.

At the risk of ranting, (as if I ever would), when M$ finally does begin to wain, it will be entirely their own fault.

This guy is a keen computer user. He isn't nearly as obscessed as some of us, (think he has a life, how awful). But he expects things to do what they are suppose to.

These sorts of problems will affect a lot of, otherwise intelegent people, who have neither the time nor the inclination to understand computers in any depth.

Seems to me, at least, that whn linux gets its act together, M$ could be in trouble.

If you use C Cleaner instead of msconfig Jojo; you still need to reboot to activate the changes, although it doesn't tell you to. I think you already know that, but I thought I would remind you just in case.

I know a few people install PC Guard and then install a decent antivirus such as Avast. They dont realise PC G is an antivirus and its the worst thing they can do to install two. If hes got a router, he dont even need a full suite and Avast is all he needs. If he hasn't got a router, Comodo would give him a good firewall.

Once while in a hurry to finish, I just installed the full Comodo suite on a mates computer instead of installing Avast and the firewall componant of Comodo. In over a year he had never had any bother. So even doing that would be better than using PC G.

You could use ccleaner, it does have all the tools in one place at least

As Ken says, if he is behind a router, there's no need for Virgins software

Uninstall ALL of those toolbars, disable everything in startup apart from Avira and SuperAntiSpyware - reboot and marvel at how quick it loads

Removing the wireless manager may cause a slight problem if Windows doesn't take over, so it's probably best to uninstall it the normal way and hope it's intelligent enough to give control back to Windows. If it doesn't you need to re-enable the wireless zeroconfig service which most of these wireless managers turn off
