HJT please

Having sorted out my friends XP (thanks to Mikkh) she has now downloaded LogMeIn on her laptop for me to access it.

She was running windows firewall as well as zone alarm, so I removed both and downloded/installed/ ran comodo. I updated her drivers and did a defrag but still her laptop runs slow. (and she has lost her recovery disk so can't take it back to factory settings!)

Looking at her msconfig I think she has at least 40 programs all ticked and I remember by using HJT log on her XP that in removing certain items as shown on HTJ actually sorted out the services problem and reduced items on her msconfig log of what was running/booting up

Anyhow, her HJT log - her ISP is orange (was wanadoo/freeserve) its a laptop running on home with SP2 (maybe SP3 added) for anyones kind attention and advice please.

Well you can delete (fix in hjt) all of those for a start

Follow the instructions there first, then you can remove all the ctfmon entries including these two - as well as the one above

I think its because my friend is on normal start up and using msconfig she seems to have about 40 things all ticked. I know this HJT has to be done first which will make a difference to msconfig (if you follow?) so I'm leaving that for the moment. Can't have a grown man cry too often, can we?

My friend is about tomorrow so I will wait to hear from her and access her laptop and do the things you've asked and then post an updated log.

Re the other thread on startup items

If you delete items in HJT, they're gone for good - as regards choice of running them that is. They're still there on the PC

If you use msconfig, you just disable them from running and can re-enable them by putting the tick back in.

The HKLM (local machine) HKCU (current user) entries are all usually shown by msconfig, but HJT looks at the others too, to give a more complete picture

Of the above all are safe to remove, save maybe apoint.exe which might (very slight risk) affect the touchpad. Most of these little programs are to do with configuring it rather than making it work (driver wise) so the risk is small.

Disable it in msconfig if you're not confident

ccApp is part of Norton Antivirus - probably a trial version. Use the norton removal tool to get rid of it and use Avast instead, unless you're already using both parts of the comodo suite ( firewall and antivirus) In that case you're already covered

I see Zone Alarm and Comodo listed, 2 firewalls is a NO NO. Get rid of Zone Alarm. If you have installed the full Comodo Security suite, then thats a NO NO NO NO NO. Get rid of Norton. Get rid of Norton anyway, I would rather take my chances with nothing than run that. Avast is the best choice as long as the antivirus part of Comodo hasn't been installed.

Even if she still uses the old version - which that is. It's better to use a shortcut to it, rather than slow the boot up process by loading it every time Windows starts.

This in one trendy young feller who doesn't use Messenger. I wouldn't install it, except its part of MSN Premium and it wont run without it. Its permanently on invisible mode, so I don't get people trying to chat to me. I'm not being unsociable, but when I doing other things I don't need distractions.
