I have just noticed that Windows Defender is installed in Windows 7 by default. Would I be correct in thinking there is no need for this considering I have Malwarebytes and SAS already installed?

Yes you would be correct - in fact you are :-p
I've left it running on mine because I barely use Windows and can't be bothered to install a load of extra software
I would assume the security center might start nagging you though. It depends if it recognises SAS and MBAM as alternatives

Try this Buzzy work for me
Turn it off in Services Elvis. Then turn off the warnings in User Accounts in the Action Centre. Otherwise you will keep getting a nag popping up in the corner. That stops having to keep giving permissions every time you want to do anything as well.

I actually got a warning notice from Microsoft, to say that Defender and Avast counter each other out and one or the other should be turned off. You should only leave it running if you use Windows Securities or whatever its called. Its part of that system and made to fit in. To use anything security wise produced by Windows, is about the same as employing the Mafia to guard the crown jewels

I get Micro$oft advice notices from Technet, but I did get a popup Action Centre warning that I had 2 antiviruses running. I also have SAS Pro running in the background, so maybe it was that triggered the warning. Also it depends on how you have got Action Centre set up. I have the nags shut off, but allow some messages to come through. Thats a safeguard against a nastie shutting the security down. If you are running both, its almost the same thing only you has disabled it yourself. The main information about running both came from the Technet newsheet.
