Sorry cant help you with Linux Elvis, I'm only a winder fixer. I must say I am surprised thar Linux can go wrong, unlike Windows which goes wrong all the time.

Very funny chaps, Linux does going wrong much better than Windows, but with a six monthly full release schedule and numerous fixes in between, it's never long before something is fixed - unlike a certain OS I could name :-p
OK Elvis, I'm not sure what you mean, but I assume you mean the taskbar is auto hiding for one of your problems?
As for the red X disappearing, that sounds familiar and could be caused by 'compiz' and setting fancy 3D desktop effects Did you install compiz or compiz fusion?
... and we're talking Linux Mint, I take it?

Press the View menu in Firefox (or press ALT + V if you can't see the menu)
Click 'Status Bar'
That should be your bottom bar back
I have it that way deliberately myself, so I can see more of the page.

H! Mikkh,
As you can see my Linux toolbar has gone and in it's place a Gray bar with "done" on it, that was wear my My Linux tool bar was and at the top left hand corner of the screen it had a - two little squires and X so i could srink the page or make the page smaller or cancel Firefox.
The tool bar has my icons on it so i can have easy access to things like Word when i am Firefox.
